Location

The Hyatt Regency Mainz is located directly on the banks of the Rhine with a great view of the waterfront promenade, just a stone´s throw away from the picturesque old town and in a perfect location for a relaxing city break or a luxurious business getaway.

Getting there

When coming from the surrounding area, you can easily reach the hotel by car – parking spaces at an underground car park are available (for a fee). From Frankfurt Airport, you can reach Mainz in about 30 minutes by taxi or around 35 minutes by S-Bahn.

Even if you are travelling by long-distance bus, you can arrive relaxed: Mainz Central Bus Station is well connected and only a few minutes away from the hotel by tram or taxi.

How to get to the hotel

We travelled by train – which was very straightforward. From Mainz Central Station, it takes less than 20 minutes to walk to the Hyatt Regency, and the hotel is only a 5-minute walk from the Mainz-Römisches Theater tram stop. If you’re travelling light, you can take a leisurely stroll through the city: walk straight ahead along Kaiserstrasse, then turn left down to the Rhine. The walk is charming, especially in good weather, as Mainz shows itself from its most beautiful side.

Check-in

As we arrived, the entrance was already closed off and a few football fans were waiting in front of the hotel, ready to take a few snapshots with their idols – that evening was the last Bundesliga match between Mainz 05 and Bayer Leverkusen. The abroad team was staying at the hotel, so special security measures were in place.

Arriving shortly after 12 noon, our actual room was already prepared. We booked the stay with points and, in addition to our Explorist status, used a club access bonus. Thanks to the bonus and status, we were upgraded to a club room on the 6th floor which is the club level. Unfortunately, the room had a view out the back and not overviewing the Rhine. Of course, we couldn’t help but ask if another room with a view of the river was available.

After some back and forth, the friendly check-in clerk found us a room on the second floor with a view of the Rhine. We were given some information about the hotel, our room cards and a note (which had also been sent by email a few days in advance) that the restaurant, bar and lobby lounge of the Hyatt Regency Mainz would be closed that evening due to a private event.

Hyatt Regency Mainz at a glance

The lobby with bar and all-day dining restaurant are located on the ground floor. The meeting facilities and some rooms are on the first floor. The remaining rooms and suites are located above. The spa, gym and pool are located on the first basement level. The underground car park is located below. The Regency Club is to be found in the centre of the 6th floor on the club level with the best view of the Rhine.

The Hyatt Regency Mainz is a real statement building right on the Rhine which offers 268 rooms and suites. The striking building incorporates the old Fort Malakoff, a 19th-century fortress, creating a rather impressive backdrop for your stay. Inside, you can expect clean lines and lots of glass.

The hotel is currently undergoing a rather gentle renovation phase, and during our stay, part of the reception area was being remodelled. The rooms are following suit gradually. But to be honest, however, we didn’t really notice anything yet.

Room

As is almost always the case, we booked the smallest category and, after a bit of back and forth, were given a slightly larger king-size bed room with a view of the Rhine on the second floor.

Room No. 209 was our home for the night. Let’s take a closer look together.

Welcome

Unfortunately, despite our status, there was no welcome gift or letter waiting for us in this room upon our arrival. We can’t say for sure whether this was due to the last-minute room change – so maybe our welcome gift was waiting for us in vain at our originally assigned room…

Entrance

Just behind the room door, you will find yourself in a small hallway with a built-in wardrobe with ironing board and iron, bathrobes, luggage rack and safe on the right. The bathroom is on the left, and opposite the bathroom door is a sideboard below a large mirror.

There is some space under the sideboard to store your suitcases, and the pay-per-use minibar is hidden in the cupboards. The top drawer contains crockery, tea and snacks. The sideboard has a kettle with a coffee machine and coffee pods, so you have everything you need to prepare some coffee and tea.

Living room and bedroom

Straight ahead, you will find yourself in the combined living, sleeping and working area. On the right-hand side, there is a sideboard containing the safe and on which the television is installed. Next to it is a glass table with a chair, which can be used for eating or working. Directly in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, you will find an armchair from which you can enjoy the view.

The comfortable king-size bed offers a large cosy duvet with two pillows per sleeper. Two bottles of water with glasses were already waiting on the left-hand bedside table, and the telephone was on the right.

Bathroom

The relatively spacious bathroom is divided into a wet and dry area. Immediately to the left of the bathroom door is the bathtub with an adjoining shower area. The whole area is separated by a glass wall and there is a hand shower as well as a rain shower available.

Opposite the door is the vanity with one sink and a mirror that spans the width of the room. On the washstand, you will find the usual toiletries such as hand soap and lotion – and, of course, body lotion, conditioner and shampoo are also available in the shower. Everything is from the hotel’s own brand, Pharmacopia – as is the case in Hyatt hotels all over the world!

Here at the Hyatt Regency Mainz, the toilet in this room category is located in the bathroom and not in a separate room.

View

The view from our king-size bed room overlooking the Rhine is spectacular, of course! The unobstructed panoramic view of the river and the promenade is fantastic and really worth the small extra charge!

The party noise issue

Somehow, the party noise issue seems to be following us around – I really don´t know why that is.

As we checked in, we were already told that the restaurant was closed for an event that evening and noted that lots of football club fans were waiting outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of their idols. Basically, none of this is a problem – as we were informed about the restaurant closure in advance.

However, as we returned to the hotel in the evening, we discovered that our room was directly above the DJ booth, which meant we would essentially be sleeping right in the middle of the party. After calling reception, we were quickly offered a room at the other end of the hotel where we could sleep without hearing too much of the event. Why we weren’t assigned this (exact same category of a) room in the first place remains a mystery!

Lounge

Regency Club Lounge on the top floor also offers views of the Rhine and is rather small but cosy and sufficient for the number of guests. Sweet snacks, hot drinks and soft drinks are available throughout the day, as well as a relaxed room for (quiet) work or casual stay outside the room.

In the afternoon, the Regency Club offers afternoon tea with cakes and desserts to accompany your coffee. Hot drinks are served, and you can choose your own food from the buffet.

From 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., Snack hour is also served here with soup and delicious small hors d’oeuvres, as well as alcoholic beverages. Here, too, drinks are served at your table – but you help yourself at the buffet.

Hotel activities

Pool

The pool area of the Hyatt Regency Mainz is located on the first basement level. The rather large main pool is complemented by a hot tub. The room has a little daylight, but it feels somewhat confined. I find that the few loungers available are not sufficient for the number of guests and the whole area is quite outdated and could definitely use an upgrade. A new room concept is urgently needed here.

Unfortunately, we were unable to take any really good photos – the pool was always busy and we don’t want to publish photos of guests in swimwear without their consent.

Fitness Center

The gym is also located in the basement at the combined spa area and consists of one large room. The equipment is quite good for the size and is definitely sufficient for a decent workout.

Spa

As far as we could ascertain, Club Olympus Spa consists of only one treatment room (but this may not be accurate) and treatments must, of course, be booked in advance.

Restaurants

Malakoff Bar

One of Mainz’s most atmospheric bars is tucked away in the historic part of the hotel – more precisely, in the old Fort Malakoff. Thick walls, dim lighting, vaulted ceilings – the atmosphere is as special as the location itself.

The bar menu offers classics with a twist. A good selection of gins, fine wines from the region, solid cocktails and the occasional surprise special. If you like it quiet, come during the week – if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, drop by on the weekend. The perfect spot for a drink before dinner or a nightcap afterwards.

M-Lounge & Bar

Casual, open and with just the right amount of hotel flair – the lobby bar at the Hyatt Regency Mainz is a place where you can arrive and relax. Large windows overlooking the Rhine, comfortable lounge chairs, subtle music. The vibe is relaxed but stylish.

Here you can enjoy coffee specialities, small snacks and drinks – from aperitifs to Espresso Martinis. And of course, in the warmer months, the bar extends outside – Rhine terrace vibes included.

Breakfast

At the Hyatt Regency Mainz breakfast is served at the all-day dining restaurant Bellpeper. At the time of our stay, the hotel was quite full and breakfast was correspondingly busy. However, the weather was quite good, so things worked out rather well as a good number of guests wanted to sit on the really beautiful terrace overlooking the Rhine. We also took advantage of the temperatures and chose a seat outside.

The service staff were quite busy, so for quite a while we weren’t too sure how the system worked here. It was only after we had asked that we learned the egg dishes were also freshly prepared to order and served at the table, and that we could of course also order hot drinks.

Somehow, the service got mixed up and it took a while for our orders to arrive. The buffet was quite busy, but the selection and quality of the food were good and we were able to enjoy a relaxed and delicious breakfast.

Check-out

We were able to arrange a later check-out time of 2 p.m. when we checked in, which meant we could use our room to stay later.

The process was well organised, and the young lady who had welcomed us and checked us in the day before also checked us out. We chatted with her for a while and were also able to discuss the noise issue from the night before. She then offered to credit our account with 5,000 points as compensation. After a friendly farewell, we were able to set off for home in a better mood.

Costs

For this one night at the Hyatt Regency Mainz in May 2025, we were able to use 12,000 World of Hyatt points as payment and also redeemed a lounge certificate to visit the Regency Club Lounge during our stay.

Departure and onward journey

After spending the night at the Hyatt Regency Mainz, we took the train back home.

Conclusion

The Hyatt Regency Mainz impresses above all with its unique location directly by the Rhine and its combination of modern architecture and historical substance. The view of the waterfront promenade, spacious rooms and the Club Lounge with a view ensure moments of true relaxation.

Unfortunately, our stay was less than perfect in terms of noise and service. The impact of a private event in the hotel was not taken into account when allocating rooms, and breakfast also lacked a certain structure. However, the team was consistently solution-oriented and accommodated us with a points credit at checkout.

We classify Hyatt Regency Mainz as a premium hotel as it still has quite some steps to go before it can be considered a 5-star luxury hotel. But still we can really recommend it for all guest groups. Solo travellers, business travellers, couples and families are equally well catered for here.

Go there?

Yes – but with reservations – we were of course really unlucky with the event, but at a quieter time of year, you can definitely have a great stay here if your expectations are aligned.

Interestingly, I find the hotel in Mainz to be completely different from the Hyatt Regency Bali. How these two hotels can operate under the same brand is really beyond me…

Rating

We can give the Hyatt Regency Mainz 7 out of 10 possible points for this stay.

The general condition of the hotel, the slight chaos at breakfast and, of course, the noise caused by the event each result in one point being deducted.
