St. Regis Singapore 🇸🇬 – testing the brand new Caroline Astor Suite

The St. Regis Singapore exudes glamour and tradition – unfortunately, however, we arrived in the middle of renovations. Between an improvised check-in and breakfast in a windowless meeting room, there were also many bright spots: fantastic suites, genuine St. Regis moments, and above all, people like Jisu, who made everything feel right again with her charm and professionalism. The bottom line is that this is a hotel with great potential that is guaranteed to offer the full measure of luxury again after the renovation.

Disclaimer:

The hotel is currently undergoing renovations while still open for business, and it’s doubtful whether this is such a good idea. So please bear in mind when reading this review that your experience, when you visit after renovatoions have been completed, will certainly be better than ours.

Location

The St. Regis Singapore is located directly on elegant Tanglin Road, by the edge of famous Orchard District — Singapore’s hotspot for shopping, dining, and nightlife. At the same time, the hotel borders the quiet side of the city: the UNESCO-protected Botanic Gardens are just a short walk away. Marina Bay and Chinatown are just 10 minutes away by taxi, and the Ion Mall only a few minutes’ walk away – perfectly located in the middle of the urban hustle and bustle, yet only a few steps away from greenery.

Arrival

Singapore is a classic starting point or final destination for trips in the region, or of course for vacationing in the city or conducting business. For us, our one-night stay was just a stopover on our return trip from Thailand, where we stayed at the fantastic beach resorts The Racha, Naka Island, and Anantara Rasananda on Koh Phangan.

How you get to the hotel

There are various ways to get to The St. Regis Singapore. The fastest way is by taxi, grab or private transfer from Changi Airport – in about 30 minutes you will arrive directly at the elegant driveway on Tanglin Road. If you prefer a more practical and affordable option, take the MRT to Orchard or Stevens station and walk the rest of the way in a few minutes. A rental car or private chauffeur service is also an option, especially if you are planning several stops in the city. And if you want to travel in style, use the hotel’s own limousine service – including a flawless welcome and your first taste of St. Regis glamour even before you check in.

Check-in

As we pulled up at the hotel entrance, the car door was opened for us, we were greeted very warmly, and our suitcases were unloaded and stored. We were then shown to the reception, where, unfortunately, the drama of our stay began.

The reception area is currently undergoing extensive renovation, so check-in was taking place in one of the conference rooms. Unfortunately, there is not much space here, so we had to queue to check in. The three desks where the formalities were carried out stood side by side at the back of the room and there were two seats available for waiting. However, both of these were already occupied.

Of course, these things can happen, and we arrived during peak check-in time. But from a 5-star hotel like the St. Regis, I would expect them to at least provide a place to sit and wait in the lobby rather than having guests stand around lost in the middle of the room, like at a Moxy Hotel.

We were each given a bottle of water, but to be honest, that didn’t make the wait any better. When it was our turn, we were able to sit down – which is great, of course, and to be expected. But given the situation and the line of other guests waiting behind us, the process was quite stressful. The check-in agent had to finish quickly and was visibly stressed.

We weren’t welcomed and were just quickly guided through the process with little words only. The deposit was quickly deducted, followed by a signature. A quickly mumbled thank you for our loyalty and the Titanium status we had already achieved, as well as the question of whether we would prefer breakfast or points as a benefit.

The front desk employee didn’t even mention that we had been upgraded to a suite or explain anything about the hotel. We simply received our room cards and then it was goodbye, next.

Luckily for us, and especially for the St. Regis Singapore to be honest, we ran into the fantastic Guest Relations Manager Jisu on our way to the elevators. We were able to tell her about our check-in experience right away, and she accompanied us to our room and was able to smooth things over a bit right away.

St. Regis Singapore at a glance

Since opening in December 2007, The St. Regis Singapore has set new standards for luxury in the city. The 299 rooms and suites, ranging from elegant Executive Deluxe Rooms to the magnificent Presidential Suite, are spread over 23 floors behind a gleaming glass façade.

The centerpiece is the hotel’s impressive art collection, featuring works by Chagall, Botero, and local greats such as Chen Wen Hsi. In addition, there is the Remède Spa on the second floor, which also houses the gym and pool. The lobby is sophisticated and open at the same time – surrounded by the Brasserie Les Saveurs with French cuisine, the legendary Yan Ting for fine Cantonese dishes, and the glamorous Astor Bar.

Suite

As we do usually, we booked the cheapest room at St. Regis Singapore, but used a Suite Night Upgrade Voucher so to be upgraded to a Caroline Astor Suite.

In fact, we were booked into one of the suites on a floor that had already been renovated, so the freshly renovated Suite No. 1410 will be our home for this one night — let’s take a look at it together.

Welcome

As we arrived at our Suite, there was no welcome gift or welcome letter waiting for us, which surprised us a little, as we hadn’t changed rooms at short notice or checked in particularly early. The only thing waiting for us on the desk was a note informing us that there might be some noise during normal working hours due to ongoing renovation work.

After exploring the hotel for a while, we asked at the reception desk whether the St. Regis Singapore might not offer a welcome gift and were informed that the gift had just been delivered to our Suite.

Upon returning to the Suite late in the evening after our trip into town, Jisu had also arranged for another goodie in the form of chocolates to be waiting for us!

Entrance

The rather spacious entrance hall behind the front door leads to the living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The minibar is also located here, which is convenient and practical. It contains all the crockery and a coffee machine alongside fitting capsules. Drinking water is supplied via a dispenser, which also provides hot water for tea. The empty refrigerator is also located here.

Living room

The living room of this Suite has a fairly large window front and a beautiful view thanks to its corner location. In addition to the couch and the small table in front of it, there is also an armchair and a desk, which offers everything you need to be able to work properly. Right next to the door, a huge TV is mounted on the wall.

Bedroom

In the bedroom of the Astor Suite, St. Regis Singapore offers a large TV, an armchair, and, most importantly, a dressing table with a view of the bathroom. Fortunately, the touch switches for all electronic devices are labeled with easy-to-understand pictograms, putting an end to the search for the right switch in your room!

The extremely comfortable king-size bed dominates the bedroom and offers each sleeper two pillows of equal size with different degrees of firmness. There is also a wonderfully soft and cozy duvet. The left-hand bedside table has only a power outlet, while the right-hand one has a telephone, a notepad with a pen, and a radio alarm clock with the option of inductive charging for your devices.

Turndown

In the evening, St. Regis Singapore offers its guests turndown service, where bedside rugs and slippers are laid out and a glass and bottle of water are placed on each nightstand. In addition, the curtains are closed and the lights are adjusted so that the entire suite looks cozy as you return.

Closet

Between the bedroom and the bathroom, there is also a walk-in closet in the connecting corridor where you can store your clothes and suitcases. Here you will also find slippers, bathrobes, shoe horns, the safe, and everything you need for shoe care, as well as the form and laundry bag if you want to have clothes cleaned.

Bathroom

The bathroom, which is also quite spacious, features a double sink with all the usual amenities. Sodashi toiletries are also provided, and I particularly like the fact that REN face wash is also available. After turndown service, the toiletries we brought with us were neatly arranged on a cotton mat.

The huge walk-in rain shower is located to the right of the washbasin, and Sodashi’s & Sachajuan toiletries are also available. The freestanding bathtub is located directly in front of the bedroom window where the window pane can be closed with a blind at the touch of a button, providing privacy.

In the passageway between the entrance hall and the bathroom is the toilet, which is equipped with every conceivable Japanese gadget and also has its own washbasin installed in the room. The area can be closed off from both sides so that it can be used by guests without them being able to access the actual bathroom.

View

The view from this Astor Suite on the 14th floor looks out towards the Botanical Gardens, but unfortunately also onto a construction site next door. However, it’s exciting that you can see right into the neighboring apartments, especially at night, giving you a great insight into the homes of Singapore’s upper class.

Hotel activities

Pool

The building’s long pool is located on the second floor. A row of sun loungers is available, and towels are provided upon arrival. At the time of our stay, the water was quite cold, so it wasn’t really possible to splash around in the pool for long.

Gym

The small but well-equipped gym at St. Regis Singapore is located right next to the pool, also on the second floor, and is equipped with the latest equipment. It has everything you need for a decent workout, but the variety of the equipment is rather minimal.

Spa

The newly modernized St. Regis Spa offers five extremely stylish treatment rooms and a signature couple’s suite with its own Jacuzzi. There is also a hot tub, steam room, and Finnish sauna available for your use as well as another Jacuzzi located in the outdoor area. As guest of the hotel, you are entitled to one hour of exclusive use of the spa per day. Please note that the spa is separated by gender. So if you are a mixed-gender group or couple, you will unfortunately not be able to enjoy this area together.

On the way out, we met Alicia — the real treasure of the spa! Just talking to her and listening to her stories makes the visit worthwhile. She even persuaded us to have a glass of sparkling tea with her — yes. You heard right. Sparking tea! And you won’t believe it, but it was really amazingly delicious!

Tours

The hotel is not ideally located for activities to the tourist part of the city, but is also not far from the MRT, so you can easily visit all the sights from here. However, the location is particularly convenient for guests who are in the city to work with one of the many embassies in the area.

Specials

The world-famous special feature of all St. Regis hotels worldwide is the Champagne ritual. At St. Regis Singapore, this usually takes place on the freestanding spiral staircase at the lobby. However, due to the renovations currently underway, it was unfortunately moved to a less charming corner of the lobby. We found this rather sad and were surprised that no other, somehow better, location could be found.

Nevertheless, all hotel guests were invited to participate, hear a brief history of the hotel brand, and then take part in the traditional Champagne ritual by chopping open a bottle with a saber. Afterwards, each participant receives a glass of Champagne, and at St. Regis Singapore, that is actually Ruinart. Pretty great, isn’t it?

And another special feature is, of course, the famous Butler service that every guest can enjoy — from unpacking suitcases to perfectly frothy cappuccinos in the morning. A piece of time-honored St. Regis tradition, embedded in the rhythm of the modern city.

Jisu, as Guest Relations Supervisor, must also be mentioned here and cannot be praised enough. She really went above and beyond and, with her wonderful, charming, and cheerful manner, managed to persuade us to stay. Turning our experience from a negative one into an extremely positive one – thanks to her – which certainly is another special feature of this hotel.

Restaurants

The Astor Grill

The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant offers breakfast as well as lunch and dinner. As the name suggests, it mainly serves grilled meat and fish specialties.

Unfortunately, the Astor Grill was closed for renovation during our stay — cleverly concealed behind a wall in the lobby.

The Tea Room & Patisserie

Unfortunately, this outlet was also closed during our stay and was undergoing renovation.

Shinji By Kanesaka

The Japanese restaurant is located on the ground floor, off the lobby with the entrance right next to the Astor Bar. The restaurant mainly serves sushi and, of course, a few other Japanese delicacies.

Yan Ting

At Yan Ting on the first floor, everything revolves around fine Cantonese cuisine — from crispy roast pork to artful dim sum for weekend brunch.

Astor Bar

Behind elegant brass double doors off the lobby on the ground floor lies the Astor Bar — a statement piece of warm mahogany, red leather, and subtle art, featuring a few original Picasso lithographs.

All status guests from Bonvoy Platinum upwards are invited every afternoon between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to join the Aperitivo Hour at Astor Bar to order up to two drinks from the exclusive menu and enjoy finger food from the small buffet.

However, we found the atmosphere there somewhat strange as the curtains were drawn in the middle of the day – presumably to create a bar atmosphere. Resulting in us feeling somehow confined. Also the bar is not particularly large and the offer was well received, so it was actually always rather crowded at the bar during Aperitivo Hour.

Breakfast

Due to the Astor Grill currently undergoing renovation, the St. Regis Singapore has unfortunately moved breakfast to three of the four meeting rooms available. Of course, renovations are sometimes necessary, and it’s perfectly okay to find alternatives. But in this case, I have to say that we were really, really disappointed, if not even a little appalled.

The deterioration in the quality of the space and the offered food was truly striking. The three meeting rooms were far too small to even come close to the size of the actual breakfast restaurant, so guests were seated very close to each other in rather austere, and above all windowless, rooms. In addition, it was so cold in these rooms, with a maximum temperature of 19 degrees, that I went back up to our Suite to put on long pants, a sweater, and closed shoes with socks so I wouldn’t catch a cold!

The food and juice selection was set up in the hallway between the rooms and was nowhere near the quantity and quality of the actual range. The staff were all either grumpy or lethargic and, although they helped when asked, but certainly didn’t go the extra mile and there was no sign of a smile. The only exception was the employee at the juice bar, who really ran himself ragged to meet everyone’s requests.

The service was okay, but unfortunately nothing more. From a hotel like the St. Regis Singapore, I really expected more in this regard – it was quite below standard. I can easily get service of this level in a 4-star hotel.

At your table, you can order hot dishes and coffees from a small menu. These are served, but the rest is on a self-service basis. In principle, this system is totally fine and was really mastered by the breakfast team at The Naka Island Resort – in other words, it works, can be really relaxed and an enrichment. Here, however, this was unfortunately not the case at all.

As we arrived for breakfast, we were greeted and asked for our room number. We were then assigned a seat in the larger, completely full breakfast room to the right. When asking if there was a quieter place, we were told no. After asking the same question to another employee, we were seated in another, much quieter room. Isn´t that all a bit strange? All in all, we can unfortunateley only say that the whole breakfast experience was a complete disappointment.

Check-out

Since our return flight was just before 11 p.m., we asked for the latest possible check-out and, as a gesture of goodwill, were even given the opportunity to stay in our room until 8 p.m. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for this opportunity. At other hotels, we would have had to pay at least part of the rate for the night. As a further attempt at compensation, Jisu invited us to enjoy the Aperitivo Hour at Astor Bar once again that afternoon. We were also each given a St. Regis luggage tag!

The actual check-out took once again place at the improvised desk, but due to the late hour, went very quickly and smoothly. Everything was prepared, the formalities were quickly taken care of, and even the version of the invoice that had been sent by email in addition to the printed copy was already in our mailbox as we sat in the taxi on our way to the airport.

Jisu actually waited for us to depart, even though she had already finished her shift for the day, so we were able to say goodbye to her in person and thank her for the great service once again. She even accompanied us to the car to bid us farewell!

Costs

We paid 518 Singapore Dollars for this one night at the St. Regis Singapore, which was equivalent to approximately 343 euros at the time of our stay in May 2025. Breakfast was included for both of us thanks to our Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status, and we received the upgrade to Caroline Astor Suite by useing a Nightly Upgrade Award.

Onward journey

From here, we head back home to cool Germany and travel on Lufthansa LH 781 in their 747-400 Business Class to Frankfurt, our home airport.

Conclusion

St. Regis Singapore has potential, but we simply visited during a bad time while renovations were underway. Nevertheless, in our opinion, the management handled the situation very poorly. The expectations of a 5-star St. Regis hotel were definitely not met, and there was a lot of room for improvement. Of course, renovating while the hotel is still running at full capacity is always a particular challenge — this decision is made by management, but has to be endured by the employees. In my opinion, this is unfair and leads to frustration on all sides.

All in all, I have to say that the whole thing feels very much like profit optimization for the owners, with little consideration for the impact on employees and guests. This is a real shame and simply does not live up to the standard of a hotel like the St. Regis Singapore.

Nevertheless, we can recommend the hotel and think that the experience will certainly be much better once the renovation work is complete. Although families are not specifically catered for here and there is no dedicated area for children, I think a stay here can be great even with the little ones. Couples, solo travelers, and business travelers are definitely in good hands at the St. Regis Singapore.

However, the finishing touches are still missing here, so we are placing the hotel in the Luxury category on our scale. In any case, we can say: Go there!

Evrywhre Kategorien

Rating

We award the St. Regis Singapore a solid 8 out of 10 possible points for this stay.

Of course, points are deducted for the less than pleasant check-in experience and the fact that the hotel is undergoing renovations while still operating, which led to the unlucky breakfast situation we experienced.
