JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Thailand 🇹🇭 – Tropical getaway between beach, palm trees and pools

Location

JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa is located at the northern end of Phuket, right on the quiet Mai Khao Beach. It is secluded enough to enjoy nature, yet only 20 minutes from the international airport. Right on the doorstep is a kilometre-long beach that is almost empty and forms part of Sirinath National Park. This beach is considered a nesting site for sea turtles. Behind the hotel are lush green coconut forests and small lagoons that give the resort its tropical garden character. If you’re looking for more action, a short taxi or scooter ride will take you to the livelier areas of Patong or Phuket Town – but back at the resort, life feels pleasantly slow-paced once more.

Getting there

There are various ways to reach JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. The easiest option is to take a taxi, grab or private transfer from the airport, which will take you to the open Lobby with a sea view in less than 20 minutes. Alternatively, if you want more flexibility, you can rent a car directly at the airport and explore the coastal roads at your own pace on the way. But if you want to travel in style, you can book the hotel’s limousine service, which offers cold drinks and a relaxed start to your holiday before you have even arrived at the hotel.

Upon leaving our previous hotel, The Surin, it took us a good 40 minutes to cover the not-so-long distance due to heavy afternoon traffic.

Check-in

As we arrived at the hotel, it was quite busy. We were greeted warmly, our suitcases were unloaded and stored, and we were shown the way to the reception desk. However, it was actually quite hectic and a little confusing. After being escorted to reception, we received another warm greeting, but the Check-in process for the two rooms we had booked took easily a quarter of an hour. The receptionist worked quickly, but there was a constant stream of information, slips of paper and vouchers to be organized to be handed out to us.

During check-in, we were given a list of all the restaurants and bars, shown where the pools were on a map, and given vouchers for welcome drinks and 1,000 THB credit per person to spend at the spa. We were also reminded that, due to our Preferred Partner Rate booking, we could use 100 USD credit per room for food and drinks.

All this information, as well as advertising for the resort’s own restaurants, bars and paid activities, can also be found in the resort’s magazine, which is handed out to all guests.

We arrived at 2 p.m., and our Suite was ready and available for us to move into immediately. So we all went there together. The keys for the room that would be available later were delivered directly to the Suite.

JW Marriott Phuket at a glance

Since its opening in late 2001, JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa has been nestled within a tropical garden on Mai Khao Beach. It is surrounded by coconut palms, water lily ponds and white, sandy beaches. The 265 rooms and Suites are spread over three floors, with many offering views of the lush grounds or a direct sea view.

Undoubtedly the centrepiece are the extensive pool areas comprising three large pools, including an infinity pool facing the ocean and framed by shady palm trees. Several restaurants are grouped around it. The open, airy Lobby offers sweeping views of the water – the perfect spot to enjoy a Cocktail at sunset.

Tucked away in a quiet part of the garden is the spa, complete with pavilions, water features and its own yoga pavilion, ensuring your well-being. You can get active in the gym, play tennis, take part in Muay Thai training or attend cooking classes with local chefs. Children are more than welcome here; the resort runs the Kids’ Pavilion, an adventure playground with supervision, crafts, and games.

Because sustainability is a top priority, the hotel is actively involved in protecting sea turtles in the adjacent national park. There is also a dedicated information centre where you can learn more about the local nature before relaxing on the beach again.

Room & Suites

We travelled with a small group of people and booked 2 different rooms but can show you an incredible number of three room categories for this review. Join us as we take a look at a King Terrace Garden Access Room, a Luxury Jacuzzi Suite and a Luxury Ocean Pool Suite.

King Terrace Garden Access Room No. 126

We had originally booked the cheapest room in this category, but by booking the Preferred Partner Rate, were upgraded to a room with terrace access.

Welcome

About half an hour after we arrived, we were brought a small welcome gift in the form of a sweet surprise to our room.

Entrance

As soon as you enter the room, you find yourself in a small hallway. On the left is a built-in cupboard containing all the usual items. This includes bathrobes and slippers, an iron and ironing board, shoe care products and a safe, as well as an umbrella and a torch. There is also plenty of space to store your clothes.

The minibar is located next to the cupboard. The coffee machine, pods, crockery and water are on the sideboard. There is an empty small refrigerator in the cupboard below, along with the kettle.

Bathroom

The entrance to the bathroom is opposite the built-in cupboard. At the opposite end of the room, you will find the washbasin. A wide range of amenities are available for your use, including body lotion and soap from Aromatherapy. The toilet is located to the right of the door and the large, walk-in glass shower is in the rear right corner. The entire left side of the room is taken up by the bathtub which is positioned beneath a large window-like opening to the bedroom that can be closed with wooden shutters for added privacy.

Living room and bedroom

Walk a few steps straight ahead and you will find yourself in the open-plan living/bedroom area. This room is dominated by the large king-size bed against the right-hand wall. There are two pillows on each side of the bed, which vary slightly in size and firmness. There is a bedside lamp on each side of the bed and, on the left-hand side, a telephone and a notepad with a pen. The radio alarm clock is on the right.

Opposite the bed is a large wall-mounted TV with a sideboard underneath. Next to that is a desk with all the necessary connections and an additional telephone, providing everything you need to work comfortably.

In the back left corner, you will find an armchair with a footrest, a small table and a lamp. Right next to these, in front of the window, there are typical Thai loungers where you can relax and enjoy the view.

View

This room’s standout feature is, of course, the terrace, which has its own access to the garden. Rather than sweeping across the property, the view extends over the surrounding greenery. There is a small table with two chairs on the covered part of the terrace. However, these do somehow not fit in this small space and must be moved to access the rest of the terrace. I can’t say for certain whether the furniture has been moved due to bad weather and is actually supposed to be in a different place.

On the terrace itself, there are two loungers and a small table for you to use, and you have your own access to the garden.

Unfortunately, during our stay, the rainy season meant that this room was very dark and damp. We mentioned this to reception and they immediately provided us with a dehumidifier. While this was great service, it shouldn’t have been necessary in the first place.

Luxury Ocean Pool Suite No. 129

As usual also for this room, we had booked the smallest category. At JW Marriott Phuket, that would be the 1 King Garden View. However, we used three Suite Night Upgrade certificates for this stay and were upgraded to the highest category. So the Luxury Ocean Pool Suite No. 129 was ours for the next three nights.

Welcome

As we arrived at the Suite, two towel animals were waiting for us, and shortly after we moved in, a cute little sweet surprise was delivered as a welcome gift.

Entrance

The powder room is located on the right-hand side of the spacious entrance area. Straight ahead, there is a large round dining table with four chairs. Behind this, on the wall, is part of the minibar. Here you will find a coffee machine and a kettle, along with everything you need to prepare coffee or tea.

Living room and bedroom

Further straight ahead is the living area with a full-sized desk equipped with everything you could possibly need to get some real work done, behind a seating area with a sofa, two armchairs, and a low coffee table.

On the right side of the room, you will find a very large king-size bed with two pillows of different sizes and firmness as well as a cozy duvet. There is a lamp on each of the large bedside tables, a telephone with a notepad and pen on the right, and a radio alarm clock on the left.

Walk-in Closet

In the hallway leading to the bathroom, there is a dressing table with a mirror on the left-hand wall, where you will also find a hair dryer.

The large built-in closet is also located here. As well as plenty of space for your clothes, you will find a safe, everything you need for dry cleaning, a bathrobe, two pairs of slippers (one for inside and one for outside the Suite), as well as a beach bag and a valet stand. A luggage rack is available on request from housekeeping.

Bathroom

The entrance is from the built-in wardrobe. There is ample space for a seating area in the middle of the bathroom. To the left is the vanity unit with two sinks, complete with all the amenities you could possibly need, including soap and body lotion from Aromatherapy.

Straight ahead, in a window niche, is the bathtub, which has a view of the private garden. Next to it are separate small rooms containing a walk-in shower with a bench and a view outside, as well as a toilet.

View & Terrace

The undisputed highlight of this room is the terrace with its private pool. This spacious outdoor area is surrounded by an opaque garden fence and features a large gate that opens onto the beach, revealing an unobstructed sea view. However, please note that the beach promenade runs directly in front of the terrace, so all passing guests can see you on the terrace or inside the Suite.

There is also private access to the public north pool, via your own garden gate. The two sun loungers by the pool, however, had seen better days, and the cushions were in urgent need of replacement. Unfortunately, the pool itself is not as large as it appears in the pictures on the hotel website, but it is still inviting for a swim.

The sala is beautiful, but in my opinion it lacks cushions to lie down. I would be reluctant to lie on the bare wooden floor to relax.

Luxury Jacuzzi Suite No. 326

We had been staying in the Ocean Pool Suite for a while, but weren’t really happy about the fact that the terrace could be seen from the path in front of it and the neighbouring pool. So, we unintentionally threw the poor front desk team, including the Loyalty Manager, into complete confusion by asking if we could move to a Luxury Jacuzzi Suite instead.

The manager was extremely helpful and showed us the desired Suite. We had a very friendly and lengthy conversation about the reasons for the change of room. She couldn’t really fully understand why we wanted to switch Suites for a lower category and said that we were the first guests to ever request a downgrade.

Ultimately, we decided to move and were really happy with our choice during our whole stay. We just really preferred the smaller Suite. It’s cosier somehow, but above all, the view is really great and we had much more privacy here.

Welcome

We had already received the welcome gift in the other Suite and eaten it straight away, so of course there wasn’t one waiting here for us. However, to our great surprise, after the evening turndown service, we found another huge gift on our coffee table: a massive fruit basket and a bottle of white wine. Amazing, right?! A big thank you goes out to the wonderful Loyalty Manager who organised this fabulous treat for us!

Entrance

As you enter, you will find a hallway to your left. On the right is a sideboard, which is ideal for storing key cards and other items. To the left is the powder room.

Living room and bedroom

Straight ahead is the living area. Here, you will find a proper desk offering everything you need to work comfortably. In front of the desk is a sofa with a coffee table and two armchairs.

Next to it is the minibar, offering everything you need to prepare some coffee or tea. The small fridge is located in the sideboard below the wall-mounted TV, which is positioned between the living and sleeping areas.

The bedroom area is furnished with a huge, incredibly comfortable king-size bed. As before, it offers two pillows of different sizes and firmness levels, as well as a cosy blanket.

On the way to the bathroom, you will find a large walk-in wardrobe on the left. I personally prefer this layout to the one in the bigger Suite. It can be closed off and offers the same amount of storage space on both sides. You will find the same amenities and utensils here as in the other suite. In addition, there is a dressing table with the hairdryer.

Bathroom

This bathroom is even larger than the one in the previous Suite. It features a central seating area and two vanities, each equipped with a sink on the right and left sides of the room. Both sides have identical amenities, including soap and body lotion from Aromatherapy.

A large, free-standing bathtub is positioned in the centre of the room, in front of the full-length window. To the left and right of the bathroom door are the walk-in shower and toilet.

View & Terrasse

The beautiful, spacious terrace boasts fantastic views of the beach and sea. It is in the end the real star of this Suite, too! There is also a wonderful double lounger, which seats two people, perfect for relaxing on. In the back corner is a table with two chairs.

However, the absolute highlight is the private jacuzzi on the terrace. Built right next to the railing, it allows you to relax and enjoy the sea view -all at the same time. The housekeeping team can prepare the small pool for you upon request. Ideally, you should let them know in advance to ensure everything is ready when you arrive. We both found the water in the jacuzzi not hot enough, and the pool itself was not particularly clean – everything really needs a thorough deep clean in our opinion.

Resort activities

Pool

JW Marriott is a beach resort in the truest sense of the word, offering guests an incredible choice of three pools evenly distributed along the beachfront. All three pools have one thing in common: as soon as you have chosen a sun lounger, towels are laid out on it and, a minute later, an ice-cold glass of water is ready for you to refresh yourself with.

The Main Pool with children’s pool

This huge, elongated pool is centrally located in the middle of the resort and, like all the other pools, is in close proximity to the beach. It is the only pool where children under 12 are permitted and the area is equipped with play equipment and a waterslide.

In addition to sun loungers, cabanas can also be used at this pool. In high season, these can be booked in advance for a relatively high fee, which includes two glasses of sparkling wine.

South Pool / Tranquil Pool

The southernmost of the three pools is not accessible to guests under the age of 12, as it is intended for those seeking peace and relaxation. Built on elevated ground, it provides the feeling of an infinity pool facing the beach and sea. This pool also has its own bar and is located above the M Bar. Here, you can relax on one of the many sun loungers surrounded by beautiful tropical greenery. Cabanas can be rented here for 3,600 THB per day.

North Pool / Tranquil Pool

The northernmost of the three pools is just as the southernmost pool designated as a quiet area and is only open to guests aged 13 and over. This pool is build completely at ground level and winds gently through the tropical vegetation. There are plenty of sun loungers to accommodate all guests.

Beach

The beautiful, unspoilt Mai Kao Beach forms part of the adjacent nature reserve and is a turtle breeding ground. Consequently, there are no sun loungers or umbrellas.

Fitness Center

The health club at JW Marriott Phuket is rather small for the size of the resort, consisting of just one room. It offers basic equipment, a free weights area and a corner for floor exercises. Guests can also use the heated jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool.

Spa

The Spa at JW Marriott Phuket boasts an impressive 16 treatment rooms, as well as a salon offering manicures, pedicures and hairdressing services.

Kids’ Club

JW Marriott Phuket is an excellent family resort and offers a large area for children and teenagers in the Kids’ Pavilion. At the time of our visit, however, this area was being completely redesigned and was unavailable to guests. It will reopen in November 2025, looking better than ever.

Touren

Of course, you can go on some great excursions from the JW Marriott, and Phang Nha Bay in particular is right on your doorstep and ideal for extended tours.

Special features

Dive & Beach Shop

Here you can rent equipment for the pools and the beach and also book diving excursions.

You can borrow a bicycle free of charge from the gym to explore the surrounding area or the beach promenade.

In addition, JW Marriott Phuket puts on a spectacular fire show four days a week. It is performed twice by the beach in front of the M Bar and twice inside the pool by the Lobby. These shows always attract quite a few guests and are worth seeing again and again!

Restaurants

Andaman Grill

The beach restaurant was undergoing renovation during our stay and was therefore closed.

M Beach Club

This beach club is located directly by the beach and offers the opportunity to enjoy delicious food and drinks from the smokehouse barbecue at lunchtime and in the evening. There is a fire show for all hotel guests on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can also enjoy a drink at the Aperol Bar.

Benihana

The air-conditioned Japanese restaurant at JW Marriott Phuket specialises in teppanyaki, but also offers a range of other Japanese delicacies.

Cucina

You will also find a lovely Italian restaurant at JW Marriott Phuket. Located on the first floor above the main pool, it offers stunning views of the beach and sea from both the air-conditioned indoor area and the outdoor seating area. As well as pasta and other typical dishes, they also serve pizza fresh from a real stone oven!

Sala Sawasdee Lobby Bar

The Lobby bar at JW Marriott Phuket is located right next to reception and is the only covered bar in the hotel. For us and many other guests, this bar was practically a second living room during the many rainy days in August.

You will be served by an extremely friendly staff from 12:00 noon onwards, and there is also live music on two evenings a week for you to enjoy.

Welcome drinks were also served here on the first evening.

Ginja Taste

The Thai restaurant at JW Marriott is located above the beach at the southernmost tip of the resort. Set in a beautiful traditional Thai-style building, it features just 12 tables, creating a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. On our first evening, we enjoyed delicious Thai food and excellent service here!

Siam Deli

The all-day dining outlet at JW Marriott Phuket offers guests delicious treats throughout the day. In the morning, you can enjoy sweet and savoury snacks alongside speciality coffees. From noon onwards, burgers are served as well as Indian specialities, but also cakes and desserts.

On our second evening, we enjoyed two very tasty burgers (one with a Beyond Meat patty!) and some excellent butter chicken, all accompanied by friendly service.

Splash Pool Bar

This bar is located in the South Pool and is the only real pool bar at JW Marriott Phuket. As well as the usual refreshments, it also offers cocktails and small snacks.

Breakfast

JW Café

Unfortunately, breakfast at JW Marriott Phuket is a bit of an issue, and sadly it’s the one area where the hotel really falls short. Firstly, there is a traffic light at the entrance which indicates that the later you arrive, the more crowded the breakfast room will be. OK, most guests at resorts want to sleep in, and breakfast is conveniently served until 11:00.

However, we had to wait 10 minutes for a table at 9:00 am. Seriously?! That’s not a good start at all! The occupancy rate wasn’t particularly high during our stay in August. Unfortunately, the breakfast restaurant is much too small for the number of guests and it’s a bit of a scramble at the buffet. The whole room is incredibly loud, and the additional music doesn’t make it any more relaxing. There is also no menu choice, and the only live cooking station is for egg dishes.

Unfortunately, I have to say that the food is really rather mediocre in quality. Even the signature French toast dish recommended to us already during Check-in has to be assembled by oneself at the buffet. There is simply not enough space for the staff, and the service stations are not at all screened off. Used dishes and food scraps were loaded onto a cart right next to the guests having breakfast! So, food scraps were collected from one bucket and transferred to another right in front of us while trying to enjoy a relaxed start into our day.

Honestly, I don’t expect this standard of service at breakfast in a 5-star hotel – not even an Ibis hotel clears away used dishes like this! By the second day at the latest, I really didn’t feel like having breakfast at JW Marriott Phuket at all anymore. It’s this quite a shame?!

Check-out

As we checked out, our suitcases were collected from our rooms and the bill was quickly prepared at reception. We were checked out by the same friendly employee who had already checked us in. The Front Office Manager, Karen, also joined us and we had a very friendly and constructive chat. We talked about all sorts of things and she told us that some areas of JW Marriott Phuket are currently being renovated and that the Lobby as well as all rooms will be renovated in 2026. It will certainly be worth coming back to see the results!

Costs

We paid THB 14,162 for three nights at JW Marriott Phuket in August 2025, which was equivalent to approximately EUR 376 at the time. Breakfast and a room upgrade were included in the Preferred Partner Rate that we booked. We achieved an upgrade to the highest Suite category by using Suite Night Upgrade Certificates.

Departure and onward journey

We continue our journey with a transfer pre-booked through GetYourGuide to our next hotel and our favorite beach destination in Thailand—the Pimalai.

On our way home, we stop off in Bangkok again and stay at The Standard Bangkok in the famous Mahanakhon Tower — the tallest building in Thailand!

Conclusion

Unfortunately, JW Marriott Phuket misses out on easy bonus points and fails to live up to its potential. The structure is good, and the large pool areas with plenty of lounging options are great. The staff are highly trained and incredibly friendly. However, the reasons for the strange connection with JW Marriott Vacation Club and the failure to remedy the breakfast situation with simple measures remain a mystery.

Nevertheless, we can recommend the hotel to all types of travellers. Solo travellers and couples looking for peace and quiet will find it here, as will families looking for fun and excitement. Therefore, we can say: Go there!

Unfortunately, there is no real sense of luxury, which is why we place JW Marriott Phuket somewhere between Midscale and Premium on our internal EVRYWHRE scale as the hotel has characteristics of both categories.

Evrywhre Kategorien

Rating

We award JW Marriott Phuket a well-deserved 8 out of 10 possible points.

Only the breakfast situation and the unclean whirlpool in the Suite result in a point deduction each.
