Location

The Standard Bangkok is located inside the spectacular Mahanakhon Tower right in the heart of the vibrant Sathorn/Silom district, surrounded by skyscraper skyline, street food and urban nightlife. Just a few steps away is the Chong Nonsi SkyTrain station, from where you can reach Lumpini Park, shopping centers such as Siam Paragon or CentralWorld and the lively streets of Silom in just a few minutes. In short: perfect if you want to be in the middle of it all without having to sacrifice style, views and comfort.

Arrival

From Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) , you can reach the hotel in around an hour by cab or grab – depending on traffic. Alternatively, the Airport Rail Link will take you to Phaya Thai station and from there the BTS SkyTrain directly to Chong Nonsi, which is practically right on the hotel’s doorstep. If you are already in the city, the easiest way to get there is by SkyTrain or Grab.

We came from our wonderfully relaxing beach stays at The Surin and the JW Marriott on Phuket and the gorgeous Pimalai on Koh Lanta. From Krabi we arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) with a direct domestic connection and from there we treated ourselves to a cab for a change. As four of us were traveling with four large suitcases, we were unfortunately unable to book a large grab on the spot. Even while using a taximeter in this larger car, we were able to travel really cheaply and were really lucky with the traffic in the evening – we arrived at the hotel in just over an hour.

Check-in

As we arrived at the driveway in front of the hotel, we were greeted warmly, our suitcases were unloaded and stored for transportation to the Suite. We then headed straight up to the lobby on the 5th floor. Upon arriving there, we were greeted by a proper party noise and again at the reception in a friendly manner, but were actually unable to have any real conversation with the staff on site – as in the bar right next door, The Parlor, bingo night was being thrown with some really good vides and one fantastic party atmosphere.

Basically a great idea, to be honest, but really unsuitable as a greeting at the hotel. The staff at reception did their best to make light of the situation, but oh well, that wasn’t really possible.

The procedure was carried out to the best of our ability and we were given all kinds of information about the hotel using the really cool paper holder for the room card. We were also given vouchers to visit the roof terrace and vouchers for a 2 for 1 drink. After the welcome drinks and a somewhat difficult blocking of the deposit, we were then accompanied to our room in a very friendly manner.

The Standard Bangkok at a glance

The Standard Bangkok Mahanakhon is the brand’s first property in Asia and has raised the bar for stylish city hotels in Bangkok with its opening in July 2022. Housed in the iconic Mahanakhon Tower – one of the most spectacular and, above all, THE tallest buildings in the city – the hotel combines modern design with that typical, casual The Standard attitude.

The 155 rooms and suites are all bright, playful and elegantly furnished – with warm colors, retro accents and a magnificent view of the Bangkok skyline. Particularly impressive is the open room layout with spacious bathrooms and huge windows that make the city part of the backdrop.

At the heart of the hotel are several restaurants and bars at lobby level and on the 76th floor on and directly below the highest roof terrace in the city. The pool on the 6th floor is framed by palm trees, city vibes and lounge music – perfect for a sundowner or a quick dip between two city adventures. The gym is right next door.

The hotel sees itself as a meeting place for creatives, travelers and locals alike – a place where design meets lightness and luxury is not stiff, but surprisingly lively. If you want to experience the Bangkok feeling in its most stylish form, this is the place for you.

Suite Spot

As always, we booked the smallest room category, but used a Suite Upgrade Certificate that upgraded us to the Suite Spot – the smallest suite category – before we even checked in. So Suite No. 1516 is ours for the next two nights. Take a closer look with us.

Welcome

The welcome gift arrived at the suite just in time with us – a sweet and a savory snack, as well as two small bottles of fresh pineapple juice and a bottle of red wine. After asking if we could swap this for a bottle of white wine, an ice-cold bottle of excellent white wine was brought to our suite no more than 10 minutes later, which we had to taste right away that very night.

Living room

As you enter the suite, you find yourself already in the middle of the living room which is dominated by a kind of corner sofa with a table and an armchair with a low table and a chair. To the right of the entrance door is a sideboard with a large boombox so you can play your own music here.

A large TV is installed on the wall opposite the couch and the minibar is located in an alcove right next to it. Here you will find a coffee machine, crockery and everything you need to prepare some coffee or tea, as well as spirits and small snacks, as well as beer and soft drinks in the fridge.

Somewhat hidden in an alcove to the right of the entrance door is a guest toilet complete with a high-tech Japanese WC.

Bedroom

To the left and right of the couch, you can enter the spacious bedroom through very uniquely shaped sliding doors. Positioned between the two doors, the huge king-size bed stands against the wall with an unobstructed view of the fully glazed façade. The bed has two pillows of the same size on each side, differing only in their firmness. There is also a very large, wonderfully cozy blanket. The remote control is on the bedside table on the left, while the telephone, notepad, pen and in-room dining menu are on the right. There are also reading lamps installed on the headboard.

The TV is attached to the ceiling with a pole diagonally to the left in front of the bed, so that the set is virtually suspended in the air. There is also an armchair with a small table in the left-hand corner of the room.

Interestingly, the design team at The Standard Bangkok decided not to place the desk in the living area as usual, but rather in the bedroom. In our suite, it is therefore positioned somewhat strangely in front of the closet and offers no other technical gadgets apart from a chair. This setup felt rather strange for us, but to be honest, you usually only need your laptop and cell phone to work these days anyway. Both connected to Wifi. Right?

The entire rear wall is fitted with a large built-in wardrobe. Here you will find slippers and the really special orange-blue bathrobes, everything you need if you want to dry clean your clothes, the safe and additional umbrellas. Of course, the large wardrobe offers plenty of space for your clothes, but unfortunately there isn’t really room to store your suitcase openly anywhere inside this really spacious bedroom. The shelf in the wardrobe is too small for this and the desk totally obstructs access. To be honest, an additional seat or luggage rack would have been nicer here.

Incidentally, the curtains and additional blinds in the entire Suite can be controlled completely electrically at the touch of a button. It can get quite hot rather quick in the room with its many glass surfaces, so the housekeeping team ensures that the blinds are always closed. Although they are not opaque, they obviously keep out most of the UV rays and thus keep the room cooler.

Bathroom

The bathroom area is located at the back of the bedroom. On the way there, the toilet leads off the hallway. Also equipped with a high-tech Japanese toilet.

At the end of the corridor is the really spacious bathroom. Straight ahead is the washstand with a huge, long washbasin. Here you will find the usual amenities and care products from the Davines brand.

At the corner in front of the window front is a huge free-form bathtub with Jacuzzi feature and directly opposite is the enormous walk-in rain shower. Here you can really relax in the shower even as a couple. In short: this bathroom has definitely not been spared any space!

Turndown

Of course, The Standard Bangkok also offers a turndown service. We arrived very late in the evening on the first day thus the service has already been done. All the curtains were closed for us and water as well as glasses were placed on the bedside tables.

View

In fact, the view from this Suite on the 15th floor is really great. T0 be honest the view is not really that special, but nevertheless the view over the rooftops of the city and the surrounding area is great! The BTS station was right outside our window and from here it was wonderful to watch the hustle and bustle of the city at our feet.

Hotel activities

Pool

The pool is on the 6th floor of the annexe, but the way there is strange. It’s as if it had been forgotten to plan beforehand. So you have to get out of the elevator and then go through a narrow corridor almost all the way around the building to get to the pool area through the smaller gym room at the back.

The whole area is beautifully laid out with lots of greenery and style. On the surface, everything is great, but despite the fact that the hotel has only been open since mid-2022, this area in particular was in a rather poor condition.

The plastic loungers inside the pool had a dirty gray edge at the water surface and if you swim inside the pool you can see that most of the light strips placed below the steps are hanging down and some of the cladding has already gone. This really needs urgent improvement.

The number of sun loungers really can’t keep up with the number of guests. You will find a handful of sun loungers and 4 cabanas here. However, the total of only 10 parasols here is really not enough to provide shade for all guests.

Unfortunately, while staying here, nobody bothered to clear away the cushions during rain showers in this rainy season. As a result, all the seating and sun loungers were constantly wet – some even had leftover rainwater puddles on them. Even after the surface had dried out, it was unfortunately also visible that all cushioning was stained and even partly ripped open.

Also personally, I was super annoyed by the background music. Basically, I think music by the pool is totally in keeping with The Standard brand, but here it was just far too loud for me – almost as if they were trying to scare the guests away. My music taste was also only very partially met here, but that is of course very individual. Interestingly, upon asking, we were told that the volume is preset and can only be adjusted centrally. The employee at the pool couldn’t or didn’t want to change anything.

The temperature of the pool itself was actually just right, but the jacuzzi was unfortunately not heated and therefore very cold – which in my opinion is a shame.

Fitness Center

In keeping with the overall concept of the hotel, the gym also has a colorful, open and friendly design. In addition to the well-equipped main room with a view of the city, there is a second room overlooking the pool.

Special features

The absolute special feature and THE highlight of The Standard Bangkok is of course its location directly inside the Mahankhon Tower – the tallest building in Thailand! And of course, what should not be missing? A roof terrace with a 360 degree panoramic view over the Thai capital!

As a guest of The Standard Bangkok, you will receive one voucher per person for a free visit to Sky Beach at check-in. You actually have to leave the hotel for the visit and use the regular access for the rooftop terrace, which is located a few meters from the hotel entrance. The tickets are marked by name and your passes will be checked at the entrance.

The elevator ride alone is an experience in itself and the immersive experience takes you to the 74th floor in around 50 seconds. From there, you can take the escalator one floor further up and then a glass elevator to the 78th floor with the open-air visitor terrace.

The Sky Beach awaits you there. It is based on a real beach club and offers a cocktail bar with DJ and the most breathtaking view over Bangkok!

Once at the top, Thailand’s highest restaurant, Ojo Bangkok, sits on the 76th floor of the skyscraper. Here you can enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine with a fantastic view and delicious cocktails. Personally, I find this a successful and wonderful change from the typical high-priced steakhouse that usually is put in such a location.

Restaurants

The Standard Grill

Located behind the Double Standard, this restaurant offers a very elegant, yet trendy diner atmosphere for lunch and dinner. Italian classics with a Thai influence, but above all grilled meat and fish, are served on benches and under cozy lighting.

Mott 32 Bangkok

The legendary high cuisine restaurant of the Mott 32 brand has opened its 11th branch worldwide here at The Standard Bangkok. If you want to enjoy exclusive and first-class Chinese dishes in an upscale atmosphere, this is the place for you.

The Parlor

The Lobby Bar at The Standard Bangkok keeps your eyes constantly on discovery. There are endless wonderfully quirky little things to discover here. In the evening, you can start the evening with a cocktail in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

We redeemed our 2 for 1 vouchers here and enjoyed 4 super tasty Cocktails.

Tease

Connected to The Parlor, you can immerse yourself in a strong black and white design. As a mixture of café and bar, you will be served sweet and savory treats alongside cocktails and, of course, coffee from lunchtime.

Double Standard

The all-day dining restaurant at The Standard Bangkok serves breakfast as well as a small selection of Italian and American classics with a twist starting from lunchtime.

Breakfast

Breakfast at The Standard Bangkok is served at the Double Standard. After you have been greeted at reception and asked for your room number, you can choose whether you would like to sit in the air-conditioned indoor area or outside on the shady terrace.

You can choose food from a small menu as well as hot drinks at your seat. You also have the option of serving yourself from the selected buffet. The service here is very friendly, but unfortunately not at all personal. We might be a little spoiled by our previous hotel, but the atmosphere at breakfast is very much that of an anonymous business hotel. However, the tables in the restaurant are more the size of a bistro and so there is quite a lot of moving of dishes to accommodate everything.

The food was okay, but not really that great either. I had a Croque Madame Millefeuille, which was basically a pastry filled with cheese and ham with a fried egg on top. I was expecting something different and was somehow disappointed. Fabi had the sandwich, which turned out to be a Burger. Please don’t get me wrong. The presentation was really good. I just think it’s always good to call a spade a spade, otherwise there’s just disappointment on both sides.

Check-out

The check-out was quick and unproblematic. Everything was well prepared and carried out quickly. Nevertheless, the friendly smile and the question as to whether everything was okay was not missing. Super.

Costs

These two nights at The Standard Bangkok cost us 15,147 THB which was around 410 euros at the time of our stay in September 2025. Breakfast was free due to our World of Hyatt Explorist status and the upgrade to the Suite was possible dude to us we using a Suite upgrade certificate.

Departure and onward journey

After more than three weeks in Thailand and Cambodia, we returned home. With our heads full of memories and wonderful moments, so it was a little difficult to say goodbye.

We experienced so many great moments, but of course also some not so great ones. We started with a whole phalanx of hotels in Bangkok. The Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit convinced us, the beautiful Park Hyatt Bangkok intimidated us a little, the sister hotel StandardX Bangkok surprised us and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit even more! And last but not least, we were a little disappointed by the JW Marriott Bangkok.

Then we went back to Siem Reap to stay at the Park Hyatt and the Zannier Phum Baitang – both really great.

The beach stays at The Surin and the JW Marriott – both on Phuket with the crowning finale at the Pimalai on Koh Lanta – were really relaxing.

After that we find our way back home to Frankfurt again in Thai Airways Business Class.

Conclusion

The Standard Bangkok is a hotel that stands out – visually, conceptually and sometimes simply because it is different. It wants to be more than a typical city hotel, and you can sense this in almost every moment – somehow you are never quite sure whether you are a guest in a luxury hotel or part of a well-curated art project.

Some details are immediately convincing, but in other areas, such as the pool or service, we noticed that the standard was unfortunately not met. Nevertheless, the feeling of being in a special place where you can experience Bangkok intensively remains – just with a wink and a good dose of self-dramatization.

So if you fancy a hotel with character, corners and edges that has the pulse of the city in it, you can certainly have a good time here. If you’re looking for perfection, probably not. But perhaps that’s what makes it so appealing – The Standard is not a slick luxury product, but a vibrant piece of modern hotel culture right in the heart of Bangkok.

We can actually recommend The Standard Bangkok for all groups of guests. Couples, solo and business travelers are in good hands here. Families can also spend a nice vacation here. There were also some parents with small children staying at the hotel. But as is often the case in such stylish hotels, children romping around and playing are not really on the agenda. Personally, I would prefer other hotels.

On our EVRYWHRE internal scale, we place The Standard Bangkok in the Lifestyle segment.

We can definitely say: go there! But with reservations at one point or another.

Evrywhre categories

Rating

We award The Standard Bangkok 7 out of 10 possible points.

The first deduction on this visit is for the pool area, which was not really well planned, with the music being far too loud and the sun loungers being wet. Another point is deducted for the extremely loud bingo night just next door at check-in and yet another for the fact that there is no access to the roof terrace directly from the hotel and only at certain times.
