Location

Palacio Santa Clara is located in the heart of Valencia, in the Eixample neighbourhood, right at the gateway to the old town. The city’s most important sights are just a few minutes’ walk away from the central Carrer Pascual y Genis ,where the hotel is located: the Gothic Cathedral of Valencia, home to the famous Holy Chalice; the UNESCO-listed Lonja de la Seda silk exchange; and the Mercado Central, one of the largest and most beautiful markets in Europe.

The lively Plaça del Ayuntamiento is also just a few steps away. If you feel like walking a little further, the nine-kilometre-long Jardines del Turia park in the old riverbed and the futuristic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias are both around 20 minutes away. The neighbourhood is full of cafés, bars, and small boutiques — perfect for relaxing between sightseeing and sundowners.

Getting there

It’s easy to get to the city centre from Valencia Airport (VLC). The quickest way is to hop on metro lines 3 or 5, which take around 25–30 minutes to reach Colón or Xàtiva stations. From there, it’s less than a 10-minute walk to the hotel. The one way fare is around €3.90 per person.

An even more convenient option is to take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app such as Uber, Cabify or FreeNow. Depending on traffic, the journey takes 15–20 minutes and costs between €15 and €30. If you arrive by train, for example at Joaquín Sorolla or Estació de Nord stations, you can either walk (approx. 15 minutes) or treat yourself to a short taxi ride or metro journey.

If you’re travelling by car, you can park in the nearby LYS underground car park, just 100 metres from the hotel. It costs €19 per day and there are even e-charging stations. Although there is no direct access to the hotel, the walk to the car park is very short.

How to get to the hotel

We travelled there from the Westin Valencia by taxi in just under a quarter of an hour.

Check-in

Check-in takes place in the lobby, just a few steps from the entrance door. The lobby also serves as a bar and restaurant, making it more multifunctional than the traditional lobby.

As we checked in, we were offered a complimentary glass of water and asked about the welcome gift for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium members. As always, we opted for points. Complimentary Breakfast is included in the programme for Platinum members anyway, as is usually the case with Autograph Collection hotels.

As we arrived shortly before 3 pm, we had to wait briefly. As a small apology for this wait, we were given a cork that could be exchanged for a glass of wine at the bar. What a great idea!

Upon checking-in we were also immediately offered an upgrade to the highest room category. We had originally booked the smallest room: a dark room overlooking the inner courtyard, but were given a Suite overlooking the city. This was another very pleasant advantage of the frequent sleeper programme. So it really is worth collecting!

Palacio Santa Clara at a glance

The stylish Palacio Santa Clara boutique hotel is located in the heart of Valencia’s old town and is housed in a historic Art Nouveau building dating back to 1916. The open lobby area combines the reception, bar and restaurant in one characterful room, where Art Deco meets Spanish elegance.

With just around 60 individually furnished rooms, including seven suites offering city views and balconies, the hotel remains pleasantly compact. The highlight is the rooftop terrace on the sixth floor, which features a small pool and bar — the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the city.

Suite

407, let’s go!

The suite is located in the corner of the floor and features a classic layout comprising a living area, a separate bedroom and a bathroom, all of which are separated by doors.

Welcome

In the evening, during turndown service, a small welcome gift consisting of chocolates and a welcome letter was brought to the room.

Living room

The living room was stylishly furnished. There was a sofa, a small table with two chairs (which looked bigger than they felt), an in-room bar offering complimentary water, coffee and tea, and a classic minibar (for an additional fee).

A compact brochure provides information about the hotel and activities in the surrounding area.

Bedroom

There was a very comfortable king-size bed with five pillows in total (four for use and one for decoration). A Recamier was also placed in the room, as well as a suitcase bench, a TV and two mannequin torsos which, to be honest, were more of a visual spook than an ornament.

Bathroom

The wardrobe containing the safe, ironing board and iron is located between the bedroom and bathroom.

The bathroom itself is one of the highlights: It has a walk-in rain shower, NUXE toiletries, a washbasin and a toilet, and everything is very neat. Incidentally, the bathroom was similar to the one at Circulo Gran Via in Madrid.

View

The suite has a small balcony with a view of the city, but the door cannot be opened. Trust us — we tried!

Turndown

During the turndown service, the water bottles were refilled, the bed was touched up and a small bedtime treat was left. This is unusual for Autograph Collection hotels, which do not normally offer this service – but here it is positively outstanding!

Resort activities

Pool

The pool is located on the rooftop and is well maintained, but unfortunately there were only chairs instead of loungers, which was not ideal for longer stays. This may have been due to the time of year we were travelling in (end of March). If you have stayed here since then and tested the pool, please let us know in the comments. What’s the situation with the chairs and so on like up there now?

Restaurants

Restaurant

The hotel’s restaurant, El Modernista, serves modern Mediterranean cuisine inspired by the Spanish Modernista style. The menu features seasonal dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and is complemented by an array of cocktails and whiskies. The elegant atmosphere and 1920s-inspired design make it an ideal place for a drink or a relaxed dinner without leaving the hotel.

Bar

The bar is stylish but very small and quite busy in the evening, so we only had a brief look from the outside.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the restaurant on the ground floor. As well as a small à la carte menu, there is a buffet offering muesli, bread rolls, cold cuts and cheese.

We ordered Eggs Benedict, but it was rather average compared to those at the Westin Valencia. The selection was OK overall, but not particularly impressive for a 5-star hotel.

Check-out

The checkout process was well organised, quick and straightforward.

Costs

We paid €493 for a two-night stay in the smallest room category at the Palacio Santa Clara, which included free breakfast and a room upgrade thanks to our status.

Departure and onward journey

We travelled from the Palacio Santa Clara to the airport and back home.

Conclusion

This small, chic boutique hotel Palacio Santa Clara is the ideal starting point for a city break in Valencia. However, it is definitely not very suitable for families with small children, but rather for solo travellers or couples looking for a romantic stay in Valencia.

For us, it is clearly a lifestyle hotel, offering a good location, a great suite, attentive service and friendly staff. We particularly liked the turndown service and the rooftop terrace with a pool.

In short: Go there!
