QR 70 Qatar Airlines on their Business Class from Frankfurt (FRA) to Doha (DOH), Qatar 🇶🇦 – not the QSuite, but still super

Flight QR 70 with Qatar Airways offers a modern Business Class cabin with doors for more privacy, comfortable seats and excellent food on their Boeing 787-9. Any minor restrictions on freedom of movement and personal space are offset by the well-designed entertainment system and high-quality amenities. Overall, it was a very enjoyable flight that we would gladly recommend. Take a closer look with us.

Getting to Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport is easy to reach, no matter how you travel. The train is almost always the most stress-free option. ICE trains stop right outside Terminal 1 and the S8/S9 takes you from the city centre to the terminal in under 20 minutes. If you prefer to drive yourself, the airport is conveniently located near the A3 and A5 motorways. There are plenty of car parks, but they are rather expensive. A much cheaper option is long-term parking with a shuttle service, which are located a little further away. If you’re travelling from further afield, long-distance buses also stop directly at the airport, and almost all airport hotels offer their own shuttle services.

Departure Airport

Frankfurt am Main (FRA) is one of Europe’s biggest airports and the largest in Germany. Lufthansa naturally dominates the scene as the airport’s home base, but other international airlines also have a major presence here.

Today’s journey begins at Terminal 2 of Frankfurt Airport, where Qatar Airways operates several flights a day to Doha. You can easily reach Terminal 2 by taking the Skyline train from Terminal 1. From April 2026, Terminal 3 will open, and Qatar Airways will move there.

In Terminal 2, Qatar Airways uses Area E, which houses both the Business Class check-in and the Economy Class bag drop.

Check-in & Baggage drop

Business Class check-in is well organised. Status guests (Platinum, Gold and Silver members of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club) can also check in here. After a few minutes, the luggage was checked in and Fabi was able to make his way straight to the gate.

Security check

In Terminal 2, security checks are located after the departure lounge and close to the gates. Business Class passengers have their own priority lanes, which significantly speed up the process. On a typical morning, as was the case with this flight, waiting times were manageable. Although Frankfurt is known for its thorough checks, the process was efficient and friendly, even though the new scanners have not yet been installed everywhere.

One of the really positive things about Terminal 2 is how short the distances are between check-in, security and the gate. After check-in, the departure area is just a few minutes away.

Lounge

Business class passengers on Qatar Airways flights can access the Priority Lounge in Terminal 2, which is also a Priority Pass lounge. While functional, the lounge is nothing special, especially compared to more exclusive airline lounges. As our flight was due to depart at 9:35 a.m., it wasn’t worth spending time there, so I headed straight to the gate.

Boarding

Boarding began on time and followed the usual pattern: pre-boarding for families and passengers with special needs, followed immediately by Business Class guests. Boarding the Boeing 787-9 proceeded in an orderly and efficient manner. Premium guests boarded via the first passenger bridge, while Economy guests used the second.

Welcome

A pillow, a blanket and an amenity kit were already waiting for me at my seat. The crew greeted me warmly and, before take-off, served me Arabic coffee and dates – a lovely, traditional welcome. Unlike some other airlines, Qatar Airways does not provide warm or cold refreshment towels, but instead offers individually packaged ones from Diptyque smelling of roses. These are also found in the toilet alongside the facial spray. I could also choose between champagne and the signature mint drink for my welcome drink.

Start & Routing

With a delay of about 20 minutes, we took off for Doha. The route took us from Frankfurt via Eastern Europe and the Middle East directly to the Qatari capital, where we landed ahead of schedule after a short detour.

Cabin & Seat

The Boeing 787-9 is equipped with 30 business class and 281 economy seats. Unfortunately, the famous QSuite is not installed on this aircraft type, but rather a new type of business class product with doors – kind of a hybrid solution. The seats are arranged in a 1 – 2 – 1 configuration, all with direct aisle access.

Contrary to what you might expect, there is no separate galley located between the two toilets that you have to walk through. Instead, the trolleys are cleverly stowed away under and inside a counter. This not only creates more space in the cabin and looks good, but also offers the opportunity to serve mid-flight snacks on top of the work surface.

The seat itself offers a range of amenities, including adjustable positions via a touch panel, a do-not-disturb function and large storage areas. There is also inductive charging for smartphones, although this does not always work properly. As well as a universal power socket and a pull-out dining table right below the screen.

The middle partitions can be lowered, which is ideal for couples or people travelling together. The seats are angled so that your feet point towards the aisle, unlike with EVA Air, for example, where they point towards the middle of the cabin. Despite the door, the cabin feels slightly narrower than similar products, particularly for tall passengers when reclining in the seat .

Of course, the seat can also be converted into a horizontal bed at the touch of a button. However, the space is not quite ideal for people taller than 1.9 metres. But for anyone shorter than that, the space and, above all, the length of the seat should be sufficient.

Entertainment

The Oryx One System from Qatar Airways offers a wide variety of entertainment options, including the latest movies, TV shows, music, games, children’s programmes, religious content, and live maps. The large monitors respond quickly, although you occasionally have to push a little harder. For me, the standout feature was the external cameras, which enable you to watch the take-off, flight and landing, even if you don’t have a window seat. Interestingly, the entertainment offered on this flight was significantly more extensive than on the return flight from Doha to Vienna. Interesting, isn’t it?

In addition, Qatar Airways offers Business Class guests (and presumably First Class guests too, although this option is not available on this aircraft) one hour of free internet access – with Activation being quick and easy.

Amenities

The amenity kit is from French brand Diptyque and contains perfume, body lotion, face cream, lip balm, a sleep mask, earplugs and socks. I actually wanted some slippers to wear to the toilet, so I simply asked the flight attendant for some as there weren’t any at my seat. However, I was given pyjamas instead. After some back-and-forth, I realised that the slippers are always given out as part of a set with the pyjamas. Interesting, isn’t it?

Food, Drinks & Snacks

The catering on this Qatar Airways flight was a real highlight. There were several starters to choose from, including broccoli and almond soup and mezze with pita bread. Qatar Airways offered four options for the main course: beef, Qatari chicken, sea bass or vegetarian ravioli. I had the beef, which was really delicious. The desserts ranged from cupcakes to seasonal fruits, although I found the quality of the starters and main courses to be better. Fresh fruit and snacks were available in the cabin between meals.

The wine list was international: two types of champagne (including Charles Heidsieck), white wines from the USA, New Zealand and Germany, red wines from France, Chile and Australia, as well as dessert and port wines. Of course, there was also a selection of cocktails.

The Dine on Demand concept, which allows you to order at any time during the flight, is particularly convenient. Before take-off, you will be asked at what time you would like to eat and what you would like to eat, so that the crew has time to plan the entire service.

Washrooms

The two washrooms in Business Class are located at the rear of the cabin, are generously sized and even feature a window. In addition to Diptyque brand products, there is a changing table – and overall, the standard amenities are provided.

Service

The crew were attentive, professional and friendly throughout the entire flight. I particularly appreciated the little extras, such as coffee before take-off, slippers being provided quickly and attentive meal service. However, I felt that it was less felicitous having the flight attendants regularly looking into the suite, despite the door being closed. This detracted from the feeling of privacy, but I suppose this is the way it has to be in terms of security but I also thought it was great that my flight attendant found time for a quick chat shortly before landing as it is always nice and interesting to chat, as you might learn a few background facts.

Arrival

After a smooth flight and approximately seven hours after take-off, the Boeing 787-9 touched down gently in Doha.

Destination Airport

Hamad International Airport (DOH) is modern, spacious and very efficiently organised. The clear structure and signage are immediately apparent upon arrival. After disembarking, we first passed through the Business Class Arrival Lounge, where snacks and drinks are available and one is also presented with the option of taking a shower. There is also a separate immigration area, but unfortunately it was only staffed by one person, making the entry process rather tedious. Immediately after immigration, our suitcases were already waiting on belt 8.

Departure & onward journey

The easiest way to get to the city is by Uber or Karwa taxis – both are reliable, reasonably priced and can be found right outside the terminal. If you prefer a cheaper option, take the metro: the Gold Line stops directly at the airport and takes you to the city centre within about 20 minutes. Many hotels also offer their own shuttles, especially those around West Bay or The Pearl.

For me, this short trip continues by taxi to the Park Hyatt Doha – probably the cheapest Park Hyatt in the world.

Conclusion

Qatar Airways delivers a strong and highly competitive Business Class product on flight QR 70 on tis Frankfurt – Doha route. The food, amenities and entertainment are particularly impressive, as is the genuinely friendly service. Negative points include the somewhat cramped seats and limited privacy despite the installed door. Overall, this was a very pleasant flight experience that has left us eager to try the QSuite, which we’ve heard offers plenty of space. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s available.

Points

I award this flight 8 out of 10 possible points.

One point is deducted for the cramped seating and another for the lack of privacy despite having a sliding door.

Recommendation

Those travelling to Doha on Qatar Airways will enjoy excellent Business Class service. The product is actually recommended for all travel groups.
