Location

The St. Regis Langkawi is located on the south-eastern tip of the Malaysian island of Langkawi at the southern end of the small town of Kuah and is built in a beautiful bay. Located in the far north of Malaysia, right on the border with Thailand, the neighboring island of Ko Tarutau is already part of the neighboring country. The island impresses with it´s dream beaches, emerald green water and deep green, endless jungle. The Muslim islanders are extremely friendly and courteous people.

The arrival

As Fabi was already traveling in Thailand, we met in Singapore. I arrived on Lufthansa Business Class in the 747 – 800 on the upper deck on a direct service from Frankfurt. Fabi flew in from Bangkok in Thai Airways Business Class. In Singapore we spent a short night at the Duxton Reserve right in the heart of the city before continuing our onward journey together.

You can reach Langkawi International Airport by plane. There are flights to several international destinations, such as Singapore, Penang and, of course, Kuala Lumpur. However, there are also occasional flights to more distant international destinations such as Dubai.

Of course, the island can also be reached by ferry from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah.

How to get to the hotel

We hopped on a grab from the small airport to the hotel and it took us just under half an hour. Of course, you can also be picked up by the hotel if you book and pay in advance.

As soon as you arrive at the St. Regis Langkawi, your names are checked against the reservations at a checkpoint and you can only pass if your name is listed. You will then go up a beautiful driveway and find yourself in a sheltered and shady courtyard situated directly in front of the hotel entrance.

Check-in

As soon as you pull up at the entrance, the car door will be opened and after a brief reassurance of the correct number your suitcases will be taken from you with a “Don’t worry about anything else, your suitcases will be taken to your room”. There is a large gong right by the hotel entrance, which will be rung to welcome you.

You will then be guided past reception to one of the many free seats in the lobby. Your passports will be taken briefly, some formalities clarified and you will be served a delicious welcome drink. We were then introduced to the butler on our floor, and then check-in was already done. After that we were escorted to our room and once there were given a tour and all details was explained. After a short break we were kindly shown around the entire premises by the butler.

Hotel overview

The St. Regis Langkawi is divided into a main building with 2 adjoining wings and 4 villas over the lagoon. In addition to the rooms, the main building also houses the lobby, bar, one of the two restaurants, as well as the spa and gym.

Situated on the first floor of the two wings are the suites, which are equipped with their own plunge pool. The hotel offers a total of 89 rooms, suites and villas.

Suite

As always, we booked the lowest room category at the St. Regis Langkawi and besides our Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status were upgraded to one of the two incredible Penthouse Suites thanks to two nightly upgrade awards. Ours was number 601.

These are 110 square meters each and are located on the top floor of the main building to the right and left of the centrally located Astor Suite. Both are truly massive with a huge living room, large bedroom, master bathroom, guest toilet, small kitchen, entrance hall and a gigantic wrap-around terrace.

Welcome

Once we arrived at the suite, our welcome gift was already waiting for us. This consisted of fresh fruit, jam and two small jars of snacks.

Living room

To the right of the entrance hall, you can either walk through the pantry or past the guest toilet into the huge sea-facing living room.

Two entire fronts are fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and offer fantastic views of the bay and the jungle.

Here you will find a large sofa area and a dining table with 5 chairs. The sideboard below the TV houses the minibar, which is subject to a charge.

The desk directly in front of the window is equipped with everything you need for a successful workation.

Bedroom

The corridor to the bedroom leads past a dressing room. Here you will also find your suitcases, which were taken from you upon arrival. The room is equipped with an open wall unit and a small dressing table. The wardrobe contains your slippers and laundry bags. A men’s and women’s hat and a beach bag are hung decoratively on the wall just outside the dressing room.

A king-size four-poster bed awaits you in the bedroom itself. On the bedside tables to the right and left you will find the telephone, an alarm clock, writing pads and the remote control. Opposite the bed, a TV is installed on the wall above a sideboard. There is also a comfortable wing chair with footstool in the corner of the bathroom.

Bathroom

The huge master bathroom is located off the bedroom. Two washbasins are installed below the oversized mirror.

To the left, in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, is a super-chic bathtub with bath salts, soap and Loofa sponge.

The shower is installed to the right side next to the separate toilet.

Just to the left of the entrance is a built-in shelf with a box for storing amenities such as toothbrushes, shower caps, cotton pads and other items.

Turndown

As you would expect, the St. Regis Langkawi – as a true premium hotel – offers it´s guests a turndown service. The comforter was folded back, bedside rugs and slippers were provided, the curtains were drawn on request and the lights and TV were switched on. Two small bars of chocolate were also waiting for us as a bedtime treat.

View

Well. The view. It’s simply breathtaking! The surrounding terrace offers wonderful views over the entire bay and the jungle just behind the hotel. I couldn’t get enough of it. The terrace was definitely my absolute most favorite part of this entire suite!

Hotel activities

Pool

The St. Regis Langkawi offers an infinity pool directly by the beach. A staircase at the back takes you to the upper whirlpool or the large main pool.

Kid´s Pool

Right next to the main pool is the small but cute family pool. I found it very nicely designed for families with a beautiful pattern and a gazebo with lots of shade.

Beach

The beach at the St. Regis Langkawi is truly a dream beach. It offers everything you can imagine – white sand, palm trees and a view of a sea framed by greenery.

There are plenty of sun loungers with umbrellas and during our stay at least three quarters of all loungers were always unoccupied. You can also find a few gazebos where you can relax in the shade.

Fitness Center

The St. Regis Athletic Club offers everything you could wish for in a gym away from home. There are several machines, cardio equipment, a free weights area and a classroom. You can also borrow headphones and the hotel has even put together its own playlist.

Spa

Of course, the hotel offers you a wonderful opportunity to be pampered at the St. Regis SPA. We did not take advantage of this opportunity. Personally, I have to say that in my opinion the rooms were quite dark.

Tours

The St. Regis Langkawi is an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. From here you can go snorkeling, diving or visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kilim Geoforest Park. If you are planning on doing such a tour, we highly recommend taking a (slightly more expensive) tour from the hotel. The excursions that start at the park are very, very commercialized and take place on boats that are by far too crowded, rather with a focus on ruckus and speed. So if you are really interested in the unique nature on site, you better pay a little more. It is well worth it.

More

As a further opportunity to get active, you can also putt on a small green on the hotel grounds and take part in many of the available water sports activities.

Butler service

The famous Butler service is part of the concept of all St. Regis hotels worldwide. All hotel guests can their assigned butler 24 hours a day in person, by phone, email, text message, WhatsApp or directly at the butlers desk at the lobby. In general, the unpacking and packing service is always included.

At the St. Regis Langkawi, this also included the option of having up to 3 cups of coffee (variations) or tea of your choice served in your room. In addition, up to 4 items of clothing per day could be left for pressing.

Champagner ceremonie

Just like the butler service, the famous champagne ceremony is part of all St. Regis hotels worldwide. Each hotel has its own variation, but at the end, a bottle of champagne is always tapped with a sabre at sunset and all guests are invited for a glass. At the St. Regis Langkawi, the ceremony took place at 6:30 pm on the terrace overlooking the sea.

As this was our first stay at a hotel of this chain we were therefore very excited about this event. And I have to say: it was really unique. A little decadent – yes, of course. But also really great! A member of staff tells the story of this tradition, picks up the prepared bottle and he then taps it with a sabre. Everyone present is poured a glass and all together toast to the sunset. If one bottle is not enough, another (or several) is quickly opened and served in the traditional way.

Restaurants

L´Orangerie

The St. Regis Langkawi‘s all-day-dining restaurant serves local and international dishes throughout the day, from breakfast to lunch and dinner. The large room is flooded with light and offers wonderful views of the jungle and the sea. We had an excellent meal here on our first evening. As we only went through the lobby to L’Orangerie opposite for dinner after our evening cocktail in the bar. We were a little late and after a short time we were completely alone in the whole restaurant.

Gourmand Deli

Just to the left of the entrance to the main restaurant L’Orangerie is the small Gourmand Deli. Furnished like an elegant café in Paris, you will find sweet treats for in between meals and can also get homemade ice cream, which you can enjoy inside with air conditioning, but also in front of the deli on the beautiful terrace.

Pantai Grill

At lunchtime, you can enjoy light dishes and beach classics at the Pantai Grill by the beach. The bar is open all day for refreshments. On Friday and Saturday there are themed evenings. For those events the restaurant is also open in the evening.

St. Regis Bar

To the left of the lobby is the beautifully elegant St. Regis Bar. There are many different seating options here – from seats at the bar to armchairs at tables and cozy seating by the open fireplace which is actually lit every evening and exudes a wonderfully cozy atmosphere.

There is a small private bar in an adjoining room inside the bar. This room is called Decanter and you can book wine and champagne tastings here. Almost all walls are made up of floor-to-ceiling glass wine fridges in which the hotel’s treasures are stored.

On our first evening, like all status guests, we were invited by the hotel to the St. Regis Bar for an evening cocktail. At 18:45 and immediately after the champagne ritual, we were offered canapés accompanied by (even more) champagne or wine. The event was the perfect start to the evening.

Kayuputi

The hotel’s fine dining restaurant is located to the side of the lagoon and is built on stilts over the water. High-end pan-Asian cuisine is served here. There are 3 menu options – with wine accompaniment on request. Or, of course, you can also order à la carte. Kayuputi only serves dinner from Monday to Saturday.

In the adjoining Pavillion Bar you will find a terrace specially designed for enjoying your sundowner. Unfortunately, we found out about this too late and missed the sunset from here. But we would definitely recommend you not to miss this spectacle!

Breakfast

At the St. Regis Langkawi breakfast is served in the L’Orangerie restaurant. You will be welcomed at the entrance and taken to a table after stating your room number. There is a huge buffet, which differs every day. Accordingly, there are several different dishes available every day. You are welcome to help yourself or order anything from the buffet at your table. In addition there are some exclusive dishes available from the à la carte menu. At some stations live cooking is also available. You will be supported by staff everywhere and encouraged to try the local specialties.

Check-out

Check-out took place at one of the two desks at reception. We were both able to sit and of course everything was well prepared and easy going. The invoice was correct and we were able to settle it quickly and easily.

Costs

For the two nights at the St. Regis Langkawi, including all meals enjoyed on site, we paid 4420 MYR – i.e. around 875 euros at the time of our stay.

Departure and onward journey

During check-out, we were asked if we needed help with our departure or onward journey. However, this was not necessary for us. We continued our journey by grab to the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, a good 30 minutes away.

As a small farewell gift from the St. Regis Langkawi, we received an invitation to the Airport Lounge at Langkawi Airport. Unfortunately, we don’t know whether all guests get this or only certain groups. But we found this a really great and useful gift!

Conclusion

The St. Regis Langkawi is fantastic. It was our first stay at a St. Regis hotel and I have to say we were both thrilled. At booking, I was actually rather skeptical as to whether I would really like the hotel, but all doubts were wiped away on site. The staff were really well trained and did a really good job. Our suite was absolutely beautiful and we just had an all-round good time.
