Everything about this stay felt like NEARLY. The InterContinental Bangkok is modern, quiet and at first glance exactly as you would expect it to be after a major renovation. At the same time, there were small disruptions throughout the whole stay that repeatedly cut the flow. There were really good moments that stay in your mind and others that make you shake your head. The bottom line is this: exciting, but not whole – and that’s exactly why it’s worth taking a look at our review.

Location
Located in the heart of Bangkok’s city center, the InterContinental Bangkok is right where shopping, business and sightseeing meet. Right next door is the huge shopping triangle around CentralWorld, Gaysorn Village and Siam. The Chit Lom BTS station is practically right at the entrance – ideal for avoiding the traffic and getting around the city quickly. Despite its central location, you will find quiet spots, small cafés and surprisingly green corners here. If you like to be right in the middle of things, this is definitely the place for you.
Arrival
From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the drive to InterContinental Bangkok takes around 45-60 minutes by cab or Grab, depending on traffic. Alternatively, the combination of train and Skytrain is worthwhile: take the Airport Rail Link (ARL) from the airport to Phaya Thai Station, change there to the BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit line and go to Chit Lom Station – from there it is only a few minutes’ walk to the hotel.
If you arrive at Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), a cab transfer is an easy solution (approx. 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic). A cheaper but transfer-heavy alternative is to take a bus from the airport to the BTS/MRT and then continue on the Skytrain to Chit Lom.
When arriveing in Bangkok by train or long-distance bus, you can also reach the InterContinental quickly via the BTS Skytrain. The nearest station is Chit Lom – about a 2-3 minute walk to the hotel.
In short: cab or grab is most convenient with luggage and after a (long) flight; with a limited budget or little luggage, ARL + BTS is worthwhile – both ways lead quickly and relatively uncomplicated to the center and directly to the hotel. We actually took a grab from our previous hotel, the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside, and it took us just under a quarter of an hour to get through the city.

Check-in
As we arrived at the hotel, we were unfortunately not greeted by the bellboy, nor were we helped with our luggage. So we walked into the lobby on our own with our suitcases in tow and made the short walk to the reception. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait at all when we got there and it was straight our turn.
We received a friendly welcome and were told some of the benefits of the Preferred Partner Rate included in the booking. The included breakfast and the hotel credit of 100 USD were confirmed directly – but unfortunately there was no mention of an upgrade that was actually also included. Unfortunately, there was neither a cold towel nor a welcome drink.
We had booked the 1 King Classic High Floor and the app already showed us that we had been upgraded to a Premium room with Club access to which we were already looking forward to.
So we asked proactively about the upgrade and that’s when the drama began: we were told that the upgrade could not be granted after all. Irritation on our part. Further inquiries from us ended in a phone call with the statement: “We can book you into the room, but without club access.” We thought – Well, great. That’s okay. So we asked whether we could then use the credit for the Lounge access? That was not possible as well. When we asked why not, another call was made. In the end, we got the upgrade including the Lounge access for free. Somehow it’s always wild that such discussions arise and it usually ends up that it works somehow.
And please don’t get us wrong at this point: we don’t want anything impossible or things we’re not entitled to. But in situations like this, we just feel really we’re being made fun of. With a good explanation, none of this is a problem and if there are no availabilities, it’s a shame, but that’s the way it is. But this interaction was rather weird and the question is: what does a person actually do if they can’t or don’t want to get involved in such a discussion – or simply aren’t that well-versed in traveling? That’s a bit of a shame, don’t you think?
Incidentally, the entire check-in process should actually have taken place in the Lounge. Guests with Lounge access are normally checked in there.
We wanted to tell you about this in detail because we think it’s important to point out such potential problems when booking so that you are well prepared. And, as always, the stay was fully self-paid and the hotel didn’t know we were shooting.

InterContinental Bangkok at a glance
Opened in 1998 and completely renovated in the first half of 2023, the InterContinental Bangkok is a modern 5-star city hotel in the heart of the city, right next to the Chit Lom BTS station. It stands for urban luxury and an international, contemporary design. The high-rise building extends over 37 floors, is located in the middle of the lively Ratchaprasong district and offers 381 rooms, including 39 suites.
The hotel’s restaurants are located on the lower floors of the hotel. The fitness area on the 36th floor is modern and easy to use, in keeping with the hotel’s city style. However, the real Highlight is at the very top: On level 37, the Oasis Pool awaits as a rooftop spot above the city with that typical Bangkok view. The Club InterContinental Lounge is located right next to it.

Room
After check-in was finally sorted out, we went to our premium room with Club Access. So let’s take a closer look at room No. 3112 together.

Entrance
Just behind the room door is a built-in wardrobe on the right which, as usual, contains bathrobes, slippers, a safe, an iron and ironing board, a flashlight, everything you need for shoe care and the necessary items if you want to send clothes to the dry cleaners. Of course, you will also find enough storage space for the outfits you have brought with you (or just bought! ;-), as well as a storage space for your luggage.

Welcome
As we arrived in our room, a small welcome gift in the form of fresh fruit was already waiting for us and was followed a little later by a personal welcome card and a sweet surprise. The first is the standard gift. The second is included in the Preferred Parter Rate.

Living room and bedroom
A few steps further straight ahead along the corridor and you are already in the actual room, which combines the living and sleeping areas. Immediately to the right is another luggage rack and to the left, the TV is installed on the wall above a shelf.
Directly in front of the window is a round table with a chair and another shelf against the wall. Here you can enjoy your in-room dining rather than work properly. Opposite this, in the left-hand corner of the room also in front of the large window, there is a chaise longue with a small side table.

Between the TV and the table is the cupboard containing the minibar. On the worktop you will find the coffee machine with capsules and water, as well as some snacks. In the lower left-hand section is the fridge, which holds soft drinks, beer and chocolate. The drawers on the right are used to store crockery and cutlery, as well as alcoholic beverages and more snacks.

The king-size bed is placed on the left-hand side of the room, was very comfortable and offered enough space for a good night’s sleep. There were a total of four pillows, two of which were firmer and two softer. On the left bedside table is the clock radio with integrated cell phone charging station and on the right is the telephone with notepad and pen. There is a lamp on both sides that can be controlled individually, as well as additional light switches and a socket.

Bathroom
The bathroom is immediately to the left of the entrance door. Straight ahead is the washstand with one basin. Here, of course, you will also find the usual amenities, as well as some Byredo care products of their “Bal d’Afrique” fragrance.
To the right of the door is the walk-in rain shower, which was unfortunately rather disappointing as the water pressure was more of a mist than a steady stream. Of course, you will also find Byredo care products here. Right next to it is the toilet and there was also a bathtub opposite.

Turndown
Of course, the InterContinental Bangkok also offers a turndown service. However, we waited for it in vain at first. After a phone call at 20:30 we only got the answer “Oh, I’m sorry, we have forgotten your room”. Unfortunately, it then took another call about 30 minutes later for the room to be prepared for the evening. What a shame, right?!
View
The view from the window was well worth seeing. A beautiful view of the Bangkok skyline is definitely on offer here on the 31st floor.

Lounge
The Lounge at the Intercontinental Bangkok, called Club InterContinental, is definitely one of the Highlights of the hotel. Free softdrinks, including coffee and tea, as well as snacks are available here from 6 am to 11 pm for all guests with access. Afternoon tea is available during the afternoon hours, and evening Cocktails with Canapés and Prosecco, wines and beer are offered from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.
Like the pool, the Lounge itself is located on the 37th floor and offers a great view over Bangkok. We found it to look really nice and also rather large in comparison to other Lounges. It can certainly be a pleasant retreat for guests after a long day around the city.
However, the service in the Lounge varied greatly. While some of the team were very friendly and attentive, other employees gave us the feeling that they would rather be anywhere else than here.

In the afternoon, as already mentioned, there is afternoon tea where you can choose from a selection of small snacks from a sought-out menu. We really liked the presentation and the service was very nice, attentive and quick.

In the evening, there is a Cocktail hour with Canapés and various alcoholic beverages as well as a rather large Buffet and the opportunity to choose from an exclusive menu of small dishes. Here too, the presentation of the food we ordered was really nice and of high quality, but the really small portions looked rather lost on the large plates and I mean – 4 potato halves with a blob of mayo is rather disappointing. Based on our experience, we had hoped for a little more here.
In terms of service, however, I have to say that the staff seemed rather stressed and there were some unfriendly looks during Happy Hour, which of course spoiled our overall experience.

Hotel activities
Pool
The pool is located on the roof of the hotel on the 37th floor and offers fantastic views of the city. The pool itself is not really small, but considering the size of the hotel, it is not particularly large as well. There are a handful of sun loungers with parasols available and even some palm trees and trees are planted on the roof. Unfortunately, the hot tub was out of order during our stay, which of course disappointed us in particular – as hardcore Jacuzzi fans!
The area also features the Oasis Pool Bar, which offers refreshments and alcoholic beverages, as well as light meals during the day.

Fitness Center
The Infinity Fitness Center on the 36th floor is really well equipped and even has a boxing ring. For a hotel of this size, this gym is one of the better equipped ones here in Bangkok. It offers a relatively large number of machines and, of course, a free weights area. All with a view of the city. Of course, towels and water are also provided for you to use.

Spa
Located on the 36th floor of the hotel, the Spa InterContinental offers treatments that are special as they all offer a particularly great view over the whole city.
Restaurants
Balcony Lounge
As the name suggests, the Balcony Lounge is located on a balcony above the Lobby with a view of the action below and the hotel’s driveway from the large window front. It offers an afternoon tea service and coffee specialties, tea, Cocktails and alcoholic beverages as well as snacks throughout the day until midnight.

SoCal
Fabi was still a little hungry after the somewhat disappointing Lounge experience and we still had the 100 USD hotel credit included in the Preferred Partner Rate. So we decided to visit the hotel’s Italian – Levantine restaurant and Fabi was treated to a fantastic stone oven pizza. Located right next to the lobby, this very open restaurant is a great place to watch the hustle and bustle at and in front of the hotel entrance.

Breakfast
As guests with Lounge access, we could decide whether we wanted to start the day there or in their regular breakfast restaurant. As is almost always the case, we opted for the Lounge on this day as it is usually quieter and more intimate here, even if the menu is normally not as extensive.
And we can state that the breakfast was definitely better than the rest of the Lounge experience. There is a small but fine à la carte selection as well as a Buffet with various options. Hot drinks and dishes ordered from the menu are served at the table. For the rest, simply help yourself to the Buffet. The Lounge was filled with a very considerate amount of other guests and the service was really good and a clear contrast to the one at Happy Hour. We started the day feeling relaxed and kind of stuffed.

Check-out
The check-out was professional and quick. Everything was well prepared and went without any problems. We were also asked about how our stay was and whether we needed any assistance with our departure.
Costs
We paid 10,600 THB for this one night at the InterContinental Bangkok, which was equivalent to around 285 euros at the time of our stay in November 2025. As described, the upgrade and Lounge access were granted as a gesture of goodwill – although the upgrade was actually included in the rate if available. The breakfast and the credit were also part of the rate. In our opinion, however, the costs for what we were offered were actually too high compared to other hotels in Bangkok.
Departure and onward journey
After our stay at the Intercontinental Bangkok, our trip continued to Kuala Lumpur, where we visited the small but exciting hotel The Chow Kit in the district of the same name, as well as the elegant Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur and the Alila Bangsar Kuala Lumpur.
From here, we headed back to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), from where we took a short flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Conclusion
The InterContinental Bangkok is a premium hotel, but left us with mixed impressions. It offers beautiful, spacious and above all renovated rooms, a comfortable stay, a really appealing Club Lounge and a relatively spectacular pool, but we were still left disappointed by the service and communication at check-in and the inconsistencies when upgrading.
It is certainly a good choice for business and solo travelers or couples who want to enjoy city life. Families are well catered for here as well, even if there are no explicit areas for younger guests (not even by the pool).
Basically, the stay described is simply our experience and may be completely different (and hopefully even better) for you. On our EVRYWHRE internal scale, we place the InterContinental Bangkok in the Premium category.

Rating
We award the InterContinental Bangkok 7 out of 10 possible points for this stay.
We deduct one point each for the friendly but quite difficult check-in experience, for the poor Lounge experience at Cocktail hour and also for the generally not really good service level.
Go there?
Would we recommend the InterContinental Bangkok? It depends on your expectations. If you are looking for a solid location and comfort, but don’t necessarily need the best service, then this hotel might suit you. However, if you have high expectations of service, there are other options in Bangkok that are better prepared and place more emphasis on hospitality. So: go there? Possibly!
