Getting there

After two intense days in Doha, we packed our bags, checked out and headed to the airport early in the morning. The journey from the Park Hyatt Doha to Hamad International takes just 15 minutes by Uber – it’s short, straightforward and stress-free. After one last look at the city skyline in the rear-view mirror, the view opened up to reveal the huge airport complex, which functions like its own little hub. So our journey back to Europe could begin in a relaxed manner.

Departure Airport

Hamad International Airport is a prime example of a modern hub airport. While the check-in area was almost deserted early in the morning, the scene changed dramatically after security. Suddenly, there was a bustling atmosphere, with travellers from all corners of the globe and transfer passengers with only a short transfer time between flights. There was a real sense of the whole world being on the move here. Doha is a particular treat for aviation enthusiasts: Almost every minute, A350s, A380s, 777s and Dreamliners line up at the gates.

Check-in & Bag drop

I had already checked in online, so dropping off my bags was quick and easy. We were greeted by friendly staff at the Business Class counter, and there was no waiting time – just as you would hope. Departing early in the morning at 9 a.m. has the advantage of a quiet airport and ensures you can get through in a few minutes and be on your way just after a blink.

Security Check

Although the security checks in Doha are well organised, the area is noticeably busier than the check-in area. Although the queues seem long, they move rather quickly. There are priority lanes for Business Class passengers, which speed up the process further. The usual procedures, such as checking liquids and laptops, run smoothly here without the strictness that can be annoying in other airports. One useful tip is that, depending on the time of day, it can get very crowded after security, so it’s worth allowing a few extra minutes.

Lounge

I decided to skip the Lounge this time. The flight was so early that I valued an extra half an hour’s sleep more than croissants and coffee in the Business Lounge. Besides, it’s sometimes nice to go straight to the gate, observe the boarding process in peace, and focus on the flight itself. So, are you Team Lounge or Team extra sleep? For me, it was definitely the latter this time.

Boarding

Boarding began on time and in an orderly fashion at Gate D1. Business Class passengers were allowed to board first, followed by those in the various economy groups. Passengers could board via two doors, and even though my seat was behind the second one, I chose to board at the front. This allows you to get a better first impression of the cabin and your seat, which is always a nice bonus, especially for us.

Welcome

I had barely taken my seat when I received my first friendly greeting. Arabic coffee accompanied by a date, the classic welcome from Qatar Airways which is always a highlight. I was also able to choose between Champagne and the minty signature drink for my welcome drink. At the same time, I was asked about my food and drink preferences for the service after take-off. It is great that there’s no fixed schedule – everyone can decide for themselves at what time they want to eat, and the service is designed to be flexible. In my opinion, it is these small details that elevate the experience from standard to truly premium.

Start & Routing

After one last look at the Doha skyline, flight QR183 took off on time for Vienna in an A350-900. With just under five hours of flight time ahead of us, it was long enough to try out the entire product at our leisure, but not so long as to become boring. After the safety video had played and the cameras had shown the pushback from all angles, it was clear that this flight would be a special experience, even without QSuite.

We flew along the coast of Saudi Arabia, across Iraq and Turkey, then over the Black Sea and through the Balkans, landing in Vienna ahead of schedule.

Cabin & Seat

There are two Business Class areas on this Qatar Airways’ A350-900 configuration, with a total of 36 seats. This is followed by a large Economy Class, which is also divided into two cabins, with a total of 247 seats.

I was sitting in seat 9A, which is located in the last row by the window. This turned out to be a real highlight. Unlike the Dreamliner, there are no overhead bins here, creating an incredibly airy feeling of space. The seat itself is from the Super Diamond series.

All rows are arranged in a 1 – 2 – 1 reverse herringbone configuration meaning that passengers’ feet point either towards the window or towards the centre of the cabin, providing greater privacy and comfort. This seat offers plenty of storage space and clever storeroom solutions, not to mention more width than the Dreamliner model featuring a door. It’s easier to get into and offers more freedom of movement, yet still has all the features you’d expect, including a table under the screen, a universal power socket and noise-cancelling headphones.

When reclined, the seat becomes a flat bed, which is also suitable for tall people. There is no mattress topper for shorter flights, but that’s not an issue for a five-hour morning flight. Of course, you will find a blanket and pillow waiting for you at your seat when you board. You can even take home a second pillow featuring different Designs as a Souvenir.

Entertainment

Visually, the entertainment system was on par with the outbound flight, but unfortunately the content had fewer options. While the Frankfurt – Doha flight offered hundreds of films to choose from, including some in German, this time there were only a handful. This inconsistency was somewhat disappointing but at least the screen was responsive and easy to operate using the controller in the armrest. This is sufficient for a five-hour flight, but not for a long-haul one.

In addition, we had 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi on this flight QR 183. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find out whether this offer was available to all guests or only to Business Class passengers. In fact, the option to use Wi-Fi throughout the entire flight for only 10 USD is quite inexpensive. Unfortunately, I was unable to come to know which routes or aircraft offer free or paid Wi-Fi. Amenities

This flight also featured an amenity kit from Diptyque, containing a fragrance, body and face cream, lip balm, earplugs, an eye mask and socks, all presented in a chic pouch. A particularly nice touch was that there were different versions for men and women. As always, a warm, refreshing towel from Diptyque was provided before take-off. However, pyjamas and slippers were missing, which are actually standard on longer flights but the set is only available as a package. This is a minor drawback, but understandable given the short flight time.

Food, Drinks & Snacks

Shortly after take-off, the service began with complimentary bread and mozzarella as an appetiser. For my starter, I chose the slightly spicy but very tasty celery soup. Alternatively, there was Qatari mezze or lobster with walnut paste to choose from. For my main course, I chose the beef, which was unfortunately a mistake as the meat was tough and the sauce jelly-like. The chicken, fish or vegetarian curry variety would probably have been better.

For dessert, there were three options: cheesecake, fruit or tiramisu ice cream. I chose the ice cream, which looked good and tasted great. This was complemented by a small selection of cheeses. A highlight was the small counter between the two cabins where fresh fruit and crisps were available – a nice touch for snacking on between meals. Overall, the variety of food on offer is good, although there are some drawbacks when it comes to the main course.

Washroom

There are three toilets available in Business Class – one at the front of the cockpit and two in the middle of the cabin. While they are smaller than those on the Dreamliner, they are clean and functional. It was also a nice surprise to find Diptyque products here, including hand soap, a refreshing spray and small creams. Toothbrushes, toothpaste and wipes were provided in the drawers.

Service

The crew were friendly, but not quite as warm as on the outbound flight. This time, I was looked after by a male flight attendant who was professional, though slightly more distant. Orders were taken flexibly and special requests were not a problem. The only thing missing was that final spark of warmth that would have elevated the service from ‘very good’ to ‘outstanding’.

Arrival

After just under five hours, we landed smoothly in Vienna, where we were greeted by bright sunshine and perfect summer weather. Flying over the Danube on the way in was the perfect end to this short but intense trip.

After a short taxi to the gate, the aircraft had barely stopped when the passenger bridge was already moved into position at the door. Despite sitting in the last row of Business Class, I was inside the terminal in no time after getting out through the front door.

Destination Airport

Processing through Vienna Schwechat Airport was quick and easy. I breezed through passport control, collected my suitcase, and headed into the city – everything went smoothly and I was on my way straight to Andaz Vienna at Belvedere in no time, where I will be spending the night.

Conclusion

Although the Qatar Airways A350-900 does not have QSuites, the Super Diamond seats won me over. The open feeling, the wider seat and the ease of use make it a solid product. On the downside, I recall the poor quality of the beef in the main course and the somewhat distant crew. Looking back, the entertainment offering was inconsistent, but the amenities and small details, such as coffee and dates, were as good as usual. Overall, it was a solid, but unfortunately not perfect, flight experience.

Points

I award 8 out of 10 possible points to this flight, QR 183 from Doha to Vienna, operated by Qatar Airways with an A350-900 aircraft.

One point is deducted for the disappointing main course, and another for the service being somewhat weaker than average.

Recommendation

Even without the QSuite, Qatar Airways remains one of the best options for flights between the Middle East and Europe. Passengers who value comfort, service and thoughtful cabin design will also be impressed by the Super Diamond seats. For the ultimate experience, QSuite is worth choosing – but even without it, the flight comes highly recommended.
