SQ 714 Singapore Airlines in their Boeing 787-10 Business Class from Singapore (SIN) to Bangkok (BKK), Thailand 🇹🇭 – traveling on a Dreamliner for a medium-haul route

The second leg of our trip took us on Singapore Airlines flight SQ 714 from Singapore to Bangkok. We flew in Business Class on board a Boeing 787-10. Despite the short flight time of just under two hours, we were greeted by a fully occupied long-haul aircraft, tested one of the largest Business Lounges in the airline’s network and an in-flight product that offers a full long-haul product on a medium-haul route. But see for yourself.

Transit airport

We arrived in Singapore on Singapore Airlines flight SQ 937 from Denpasar and continued our journey to Bangkok seamlessly. We arrived at Terminal 2 and were also departing from there, but had time and inclination to visit the newly renovated Lounge in Terminal 3. So we took the Skytrain, running reliably every six minutes between the Terminals.

Lounge

After arriving in Terminal 3, we took the escalator up to the Singapore Airline Lounges. In addition to the First Class Lounge, the huge Silver Kris Business Class Lounge of Singapore Airlines is also located here. The overview map gives an impression of the dimensions – in terms of area, it is roughly equivalent to two or three Senator Lounges in Frankfurt airport.

Access was straightforward, our Boarding Passes were scanned and we were directed straight down the correct way. The Lounge offers an enormous range of seating, rest and dining areas.

In direct comparison to the Business Lounge in Terminal 2, this completely redesigned Lounge is in a completely different league. We were particularly impressed by the daylight, which makes the whole atmosphere much more open. A visit here is definitely worthwhile for a transit or departure on a Star Alliance carrier.

In addition to classic buffet stations, there is a Bar with a barista, several live cooking stations, a coffee island and a self-service bar. Impressive!

Security check

In Singapore, the security check unfortunately takes place directly at the gate. Personally, I always find this a bit annoying and prefer a centralized option, but here management has opted for this version. In this case, there is no separate check by travel class, but at least a separate waiting area for Business Class guests. However, this was simply partitioned off and not different from the rest of the gate area – but was large enough for every Business Class guest to safely get a seat.

Boarding

Our flight was boarded at Gate F 60 in Terminal 2, where there was also a separate queue for Business Class and status passengers, as well as for the Economy Class groups. We were assigned Boarding group 1 and able to board first and on time. Unfortunately, there was no extra option for families with children or people who need special assistance to boarding earlier.

Here in Singapore we went straight down a corridor behind the gate counter and then directly onto the passenger boarding bridge, from where we were able to take the first access to the aircraft as Business Class guests.

Welcome on board

We received a friendly welcome on board and were shown to our seats after a quick check of our boarding pass. While we were still making ourselves comfortable in our seats, we were offered a glass of Champagne and a hot towel. Of course, you can also opt for a non-alcoholic version.

Start & Routing

About twenty minutes late and after a rainy start in Singapore, we headed straight for Bangkok. We took off in a south-westerly direction and, after a steep right turn, flew straight over Malaysia and the Gulf of Thailand into the Thai capital. There were a few loops there due to the wait before we landed even 2 minutes ahead of the planned arrival time.

Cabin & seat

The Boeing 787-10 fleet of Singapore Airlines has a Business Class cabin with a total of 36 seats in a 1 – 2 – 1 configuration distributed between the two front pairs of cabin doors, as well as 301 Economy Class seats in a 3 – 3 – 3 layout. There is no Premium Economy – this type of aircraft is more likely to be used for medium-haul flights than on long-haul routes.

The Business Class cabin was pleasantly quiet, very tidy and – in keeping with Singapore Airlines – extremely elegant and high-quality. Discreet Advent decorations made it clear that we were traveling in November and that the Christmas season was already approaching. There were also overhead luggage compartments above all the seats, which provided storage space but also took away some of the cabin’s spaciousness.

Incidentally, I found it extremely interesting that the long-haul Business Class product on medium-haul routes is really well received here. The cabin was almost fully occupied on this flight and only very few seats were left unoccupied.

In this configuration, seats are staggered, with some seats placed closer to the window and others closer to the aisle. In the middle of the cabin, the seats are either directly next to the aisle and therefore somewhat more separated from the person sitting next to them or – ideal for passengers traveling together – closer together and at a greater distance from the aisle.

The armrest can be lowered directly on the seat so that it is level with the seat cushion. An individual reading lamp is integrated into the side panel, and there is also a small storage area for personal items behind the shelf. A bottle of water, the menu and headphones were already ready here when we got in.

The seat is complemented by the available charging options, a small pull-out mirror and a hook for headphones, glasses or similar items, which are stored in a separate compartment above the storage surface. The table can be pulled out from underneath the monitor, while the seat can be adjusted to various positions at the touch of a button. The controls can also be used to control the reading lamp, call the cabin crew, switch the screen on and off and activate the “Do not disturb” sign.

We sat in a staggered position again, Micha behind me in the aisle, me one row in front closer to the window. There were already cushions and blankets at our seats. Interestingly, compared to the A350-900, we noticed that there was no noticeable distance between the seat and the outer wall.

The seat can of course be easily converted into a completely flat bed at the touch of a button. At 1.90 m tall, the legroom was sufficient, but overall the seat still felt rather narrow. We both felt limited of being able to move freely or stretch out – but for the short flight time, this seat is of course absolutely great – especially compared to European medium-haul flights featuring only regular Economy Class seats.

Entertainment

Interestingly, the in-flight entertainment system in the Boeing 787-10 differs visually from the one at the A350, but worked just as reliably via touchscreen. The selection of movies, series and airline information was also extensive and, above all, absolutely sufficient for the short flight time.

Amenities

Singapore Airlines does not offer a classic amenity kit on flights of less than six hours. However, care products such as hand lotion and perfume were available for use in the washrooms.

Food, drink & snacks

We took off in the early evening and so we were served a 3-course dinner on this flight. As on the previous flight, we could choose from three options for the main course and everything was served on a tray.

The service began immediately after the seatbelt signs were switched off with the serving of the menus and a first round of drinks.

Thai-style scallops with green mango salad were served as a starter. For the main course, we could choose between: fried chicken, massaman curry with fish or beef with rice noodles. We both opted for the chicken. For dessert we had a chocolate banana cake, followed by tea and coffee. The taste of the food on this flight was really much better than on the previous one from Bali to Singapore.

Washrooms

The Boeing 787-10 features four washrooms in the front cabin area. The two front ones are located by the Cockpit but there was a bit of a confusion with the two rear ones because they were also used by Economy Class. There is a changing table for children and additional amenities such as lotion, razors, toothbrushes and small towels are available in all four lavatories.

Service

The service on this flight seemed much slower than on the first leg. First of all, almost all book-the-cook orders were processed before the regular service began. As a result, we were the last to receive our food, while other passengers had already finished. The crew seemed somehow overwhelmed by the situation at times, which was also reflected in a noticeable lack of the signature Singapore Airlines friendliness.

Arrive

After a smooth descent, we touched down in Bangkok almost exactly at the scheduled arrival time and didn’t have to taxi too far to get to our gate. Here in Bangkok, too, two passenger bridges were connected to the plane, so we were able to disembark through the front door quickly and relaxed.

Destination airport

A monitor in the passenger bridge already showed us which baggage carousel our luggage would be delivered to – a small detail, but one that immediately made the process easier.

Immigration with passport control is hard to miss, and as a Business Class guest you can also use a – somewhat hidden – fast track, which usually enables you to pass through immigration very quickly.

Once this step has been completed, the luggage is usually already waiting on the carousel so that you can then go straight to the arrival hall and on to the grab stand.

For us, this stay first took us to the Waldorf Astoria and the St. Regis before we headed back to our home airport in Frankfurt.

Costs

We booked this trip from Denpasar via Singapore to Bangkok with 30,000 Miles & More miles each and an additional payment of only 21.91 euros per person via the Miles & More hotline at the beginning of July 2025. As Singapore Airlines shuttles back and forth between Singapore and Bali what felt like 10 times a day we opted for this flight simply because of the departure and arrival times.

Conclusion

Singapore Airlines is really great in terms of their product. The seat is great and elegant, even if a little narrow and short for our size. We were impressed by the new Lounge and the food on this flight was definitely much better than on the previous one. The service, on the other hand, was strangely uncoordinated and rushed – the friendliness fell by the wayside a little, which we thought was a real shame. Nevertheless, it is of course really great to get a fully-fledged Business Class product on such a short flight – European airlines can certainly only marvel at that!

Points

We award this Singapore Airlines flight SQ 714 only 8 out of 10 possible points.

We deduct one point as the service simply didn’t run smoothly and another point because we found the seat strangely cramped – although we are fully aware that the product is basically identical to the one on the previous flight. But still. Somehow it felt different.

Recommendation

Yes, we can definitely recommend this flight – especially because of the Lounge in Singapore and the improved catering. However, those who value fast and consistent service should unfortunately adjust their expectations somewhat at this point.
